Two-Game Subway Series Starts Monday in the Bronx

Big Apple Center of Baseball World

When the New York Mets and New York Yankees first met less than a month ago, the Mets were clinging to a two-game lead in the National League East and the Yankees were perched atop the American League East with a 12½-game cushion. As they prepare to do battle in Yankee Stadium on Monday, the Mets own a four-game lead while the Yankees’ margin is down to eight.

The landscape has changed a bit, but there remains two first-place teams in New York City and legions of fans who want you to know all about it. With the city abuzz over the latest installment of the Subway Series, let’s jump into the latest MLB lines, injury reports, and MLB odds for the Mets and Yankees. We’ve plenty of MLB spreads for you to consider.

Mets Coming Off Thrilling Win

The New York Mets swept two from the Yankees in the first matchup between the cross-city rivals, which kicked off a streak in which they’ve won seven of eight series. The latest of those series victories came courtesy of bat-flipping Mark Canha, whose second home run was the deciding factor in a wild 10-9 victory at Philadelphia on Sunday.

“The offense just didn’t give in,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said after his team erased deficits of 4-0, 7-4 and 8-7. “Our guys thought there was a game there to be won and they did what it took.”

That “game to be won” left Showalter’s crew with a 21-7 mark since a three-game slide that spanned the All-Star break.

There’s still some uncertainty to the Mets’ pitching plans this week, as Taijuan Walker might pitch Tuesday in the series finale if he responds well to Sunday’s workout. Walker left his previous outing early with back spasms and was bumped from his scheduled start over the weekend in order to get right.

Tuesday, however, is Jacob deGrom’s slot. The team is toying with the idea of moving deGrom to Thursday against Colorado at home, which would put him on schedule to make a start next week in a much-anticipated series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

All of this will be ironed out in time, but it matters little to Monday’s plan. Max Scherzer will be more than ready to go as he looks to duplicate his previous effort against the Yankees in which he held them scoreless for seven innings. He’s also sitting on 199 career wins, so there might be some extra motivation, a potential factor for those of you betting online.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner, who could thrust himself into the conversation for a fourth with a dominant start in this one, has a 3.93 ERA in his career at Yankee Stadium. He also has a 3.72 mark over his last three road starts. Some more pedestrian figures, and perhaps those will sway you one way or another at the sportsbook.

Benintendi Gives Yankees Much-Needed Spark

The New York Yankees have won just two of their last eight games and four of 18 after Sunday’s dramatic 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Andrew Benintendi’s tiebreaking two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference and it allowed the Yanks to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays, who would’ve been within six games of first place with a victory.

“It definitely was one of those moments,” manager Aaron Boone said of the homer. “No secret what we’re going through. That was a big blow in an important game.”

Perhaps it can serve as a turnaround for the All-Star Benintendi, who is hitting .211 with his new team. Or maybe it can spark an offense that has produced as many as four runs just twice in a 12-game span, a trend that won’t be easy to turn around against someone like Scherzer.

Domingo German will hope for some of that hard-to-find run support when he gets the ball for the hosts. He was chased in the fifth inning his last time out against Tampa Bay and has allowed five runs in 9.2 innings at home this year, not exactly the stuff that generates confidence for those of you making MLB picks.

German gave up two runs in 4.2 lackluster frames at the Mets in July opposite Scherzer, although he did have a season-high seven strikeouts in that one.

Mets vs Yankees Head-to-Head

The Mets can clinch the season series for the second straight time with a win either Monday or Tuesday. The Yankees haven’t won the season series since 2017, and they won’t this year.

Mets vs Yankees Prediction

When the Yankees won on a walk-off grand slam by Josh Donaldson last week against Tampa Bay, it was a cathartic moment for the struggling squad. It felt as if the floodgates would open and they’d begin to hammer the ball around the park again. Alas, they proceeded to lose their next three games while scoring a grand total of four runs.

So while the Benintendi home run in a much-needed series finale has that same feel, it’s not a given to turn this squad around. They’re still waiting on Giancarlo Stanton to come back from a heel issue and he isn’t expected to until later in the week.

The Bombers are averaging 3.8 runs in 26 contests since Stanton went down. That’s a large enough sample size that you can’t expect a turnaround on one big home run, and you certainly can’t anticipate it to happen so easily with a formidable obstacle like Scherzer standing in the way.

Take a look at the MLB odds and think about siding with Mad Max against a Yankees team that isn’t out of the woods just yet.
