3 Top MLB Player Props for Today

1. Guardians SP Ben Lively 6+ Hits Allowed

The Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals continue a massive three-game set tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals (75-65) and Guardians (80-59) are battling for the AL Central title, with the Twins (75-63) still in the mix. The Royals will try to salvage the series and avoid a sweep tonight. If Cleveland completes the series sweep, the Royals division title hopes are all about squashed.

Cleveland’s pitching staff has been excellent this season, but I expect the dangerous Kansas City lineup to produce tonight against veteran right-hander Ben Lively. The 32-year-old Lively has bounced around in his career and has surprised in his first season with Cleveland. He is coming off a poor outing against the Pirates, and I expect more of the same tonight.

Entering this season, Lively had a career ERA of 5.05 and a 1.36 WHIP. He was brought in to come out of the bullpen, but the Guardians have utilized him as a starter, and things have worked out well. However, I expect regression for the right-hander. Lively is in the bottom 6 percentile in fastball velocity and 12th in exit velocity. He is just 9th in Chase % and 6th in Whiff %! He’s been about as mediocre as it comes, and Lively has been lucky.

The Royals have the seventh-highest batting average (.253) and are hitting (.267) since the All-Star break. The Royals have mashed at home all season, led by Bobby Witt Jr., and I expect the bats to wake up tonight. One problem we could encounter is the Guardians’ bullpen is well-rested, so Lively could have a short leash. Still, I’m placing a bet online on Kansas City’s bats against the veteran journeyman tonight.

2. Tigers SP Keider Montero Under 3½ Strikeouts

If you’ve been following along with my MLB picks this season, you’ll know how rarely I like to take Unders. I’m firing on one with Keider Montero on the mound against the Padres. The Padres bats have consistently been among the best in the bigs. Since the All-Star break, they have been third in wRC+ and second in batting average (.273). They are the hottest team in the league, with a 29-12 record since the break.

They are trying to snatch the lead in the NL West from the Dodgers, and they don’t appear to be slowing down! The Padres have the lowest K% in the league and have been striking out even less over the last two weeks. Montero has been inconsistent in his rookie season for Detroit, and he’s not striking out many batters. The 24-year-old right-hander is in the 28th percentile in K and 17th in Whiff %.

He has finished above this line in 10 of 13 games, so this pick has plenty of risk. Still, 8 of the last 11 starting pitchers have finished below this line against the Padres—Trust San Diego tonight to limit the strikeouts against Montero.

3. Astros SP Spencer Arrighetti at Least 6 Strikeouts

We are headed to Cincinnati for our final MLB bet tonight. The Astros have won five of their last six and look to keep momentum when they take on the Reds. I’m not sure there’s a rookie starting pitcher as confident as Paul Skenes right now, but if I had to choose, Spencer Arrighetti would be a contender.

The 24-year-old rookie right-hander has been impressive over the last month, including three starts with double-digit strikeouts. In five starts in August, Arrighetti posted a 1.95 ERA, a .168 OBA, and had an impressive league-high 13.08 K/9!

He will face a Reds lineup that’s been up and down this season. Cincy has the sixth-highest K% in the league and the fourth-lowest batting average (.233). Since the break, the Reds remain a bottom-ten offense.

The Astros rookie has a 28% K%, which is equivalent to Michael King tied for 14th-highest among starters. The Astros need a boost from their starting rotation if they are to make another World Series run, and it appears it could come from Arrighetti down the stretch.

As always, make sure the check the latest MLB news before placing your bets!
