New York Seeks Bounce-Back vs Washington

The New York Mets have followed up an 8-1 surge with a three-game slide, including an ugly 5-0 loss to the last-place Washington Nationals in the opener of their three-game series Tuesday night. The Mets will try to get one back when the divisional foes square off Wednesday at Citi Field, which offers up a nice opportunity for a bet online.

Washington is no slouch and has been leaning on some solid pitching as it digs out of an early hole with three wins in the last four games. Let’s take a look at the latest MLB news, injury reports, and MLB lines for the Nationals vs. Mets. There are plenty of MLB picks in our Locker Room.

Gore Gets Nod for Nationals

Washington enters this one not allowing any runs in 12 straight innings, six of which were accomplished by Josiah Gray in Tuesday’s shutout. He limited the Mets to four hits while striking out nine and walking one, the latest in a series of solid pitching performances by the Nationals’ staff.

Over the team’s last six games, it has posted a 2.04 ERA, with opponents batting only .201 against Washington. For Gray, a dominant effort in Queens, near his childhood home of New Rochelle, was extra special.

Every part of this today was a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s that much more special to get my first win here in New York. … Everyone came out in droves and came to support.”

MacKenzie Gore will look to build upon a quality start vs. Baltimore his last time out. He has 25 strikeouts and 15 hits allowed in 21 innings on the season, and he’ll be catching the Mets at a good time and place – they hit .220 at home this year and have averaged 2.8 runs over their last five at Citi Field.

Gore, a first-round selection in 2017 who came over in the Juan Soto deal, is 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA in his career on the road.

Mets Start Homestand on Sour Note

After a 10-game road trip, the Mets were looking forward to some quality time at home. It didn’t quite materialize in an uninspired effort Tuesday night, resulting in their fourth shutout loss of the season.

New York enters Wednesday as one of two teams in the majors (Los Angeles Dodgers are the other) with at least 100 walks on the season, but it could not work Gray and reliever Mason Thompson for much on Tuesday.

We had [13] strikeouts and one walk,” manager Buck Showalter said. “That’s usually not our game.”

Brandon Nimmo had one of the Mets’ five hits to leave his team-leading average at a healthy .349. Starling Marte, the team’s No. 2 hitter most, was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and dropped to .222.

New York’s 13 strikeouts at the plate were a season-high.

Rookie Kodai Senga will make his fifth start in a Mets uniform. He’s given up nine runs in 15 innings across three road starts, but he dazzled through six frames (three hits, one run) in his lone Citi Field outing on April 8 vs. Miami.

Going back a bit further, the Mets are 13-3 in their last 16 at home against the Nationals, even with Tuesday’s loss. Senga’s one issue so far has been his propensity to give up the long ball (five in the last three outings), but Washington is last in the majors with only 11 of those.

Expect him to keep the Nationals down long enough to get the Mets a win in a low-scoring affair.

Washington is listed at +175 in our Vegas MLB odds. This means that if you wager $100 on the Nationals, you have a chance to win $175. New York is -205, offering a chance to win $49 on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Washington a 36.36% chance to win, with the Mets at 67.21%.
