Teams Going Different Directions
The Washington Nationals were big-time sellers, while the Philadelphia Phillies are in the race for a playoff spot. The rebuild has begun in our nation’s capital, and the Phillies are taking full advantage of that.
As we sit here in early August, the Nationals are 36-72, while their competition, the Phillies, are 58-48. In this NL East rivalry, the Phillies have the upper hand sitting at third in one of the best divisions in all of baseball.
Let the Rebuild Begin
For the remainder of 2022, it will be a learning experience for the Washington Nationals. The rebuild has begun as they said goodbye to their generational superstar, the 23-year-old Juan Soto.
For the team that is 3-7 in their last 10 games, Patrick Corbin takes the mound. Corbin is 4-15 in 2022 with a 6.57 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, and 102 strikeouts through 109.2 IP. The Nationals have not won a game with the LHP since June 28.
The 33-year-old is having the worst season of his career. The Phillies put up nine runs against Corbin in his lone start against them, but only two were earned.
The moneyline has not been a friend to the Nationals, and our MLB free picks have shown that. They have 19 wins on the road and 21 wins at night. The spread is a slightly different story.
Washington is 44-61 against the spread and a shocking 25-25 on the road. They are 24-40 at night, however.
Phillies Feeling Wild
In a stacked NL East with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets having incredible seasons, the Philadelphia Phillies may have to focus on an alternate path to the playoffs, the Wild Card.
With a record of 8-2 in their last 10 games, the Phillies are one of the hottest teams in all of baseball. This will pay dividends in the tightly contested NL Wild Card, where they are tied for the third spot.
Ranger Suarez will step on the rubber for the Phillies Saturday evening. Suarez is 7-5 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 80 strikeouts through 95.0 IP. He has not allowed a single earned run in his last three outings.
Suarez does struggle at Citizens Bank Park, where he is 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA. Not a lot of people know the name Suarez, but he is quietly having a great season.
Philadelphia is known for its well-rounded team. Their moneyline on MLB lines is 28-25 at home and 36-34 at night. Philadelphia has also done well against the spread in 2022.
They are 56-50, but only 25-28 at home. Perhaps they eat too many Philly cheesesteaks before the games.
Nationals vs Phillies Head-to-Head
To no shock, the Philadelphia Phillies have owned the season series against their NL East foe. The Phillies have taken 8 of 10 matchups against the Washington Nationals in 2022.
The Phillies won their first two games of this four-game series, but game one came with controversy for those betting online. The contest was ended in five innings due to a rain delay in the 5-4 victory where the Nationals had all the momentum.
