National Emergency
The Washington Nationals are only 29-53 this season. They trail the division-leading New York Mets by 22 games. Washington lost five straight games against the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates, the latest Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Marlins. Washington was swept in that four-game series at home. It’s not even the halfway point of the season, but the Nats’ players have to be looking forward to the offseason.
Josh Bell has been the lone standout in the capital, posting a .318 batting average and rivaling some of the perennial MVP candidates in splits at the plate. Superstar Juan Soto has not been as effective, either as his teammate as in past seasons. He’s the team leader with 15 homers. Soto departed Sunday’s game with an injured calf and was a DNP Monday.
Righthander Paolo Espino (0-1, 2.80 ERA) will continue his bullpen-to-starter role, taking the mound Tuesday. He surrendered four earned runs in 4.1 innings against the Pirates his last out.
Is Philly Phor Real?
The Philadelphia Phillies were a divisive team during offseason MLB predictions, offense was solid but woefully defensive. Throw in the bullpen failing to preserve to victories, and thus a change in the dugout.
Regained its footing (20-9 since Rob Thomson took over the reins) and is playing quite well, even with reigning MVP Bryce Harper sidelined (broken thumb) after being hit by a pitch
Kyle Schwarber has become the main man in Philly, team-highs in home runs (23) and RBIs (51) despite struggling to get on consistently.
Rhys Hoskins has also impressed, while the player that many thought would complete the Phillies’ three-headed monster, Nick Castellanos, is only hitting .248 on the season (.231 in July).
Southpaw Christopher Sanchez (0-1, 4.60 ERA) make his second start of the season (third of career) Tuesday nite.
Nationals vs Phillies Head-to-Head
Washington’s lost four of five games against the Phillies this season.
Philly also found itself on the winning end of the 2021 series, with record of 13-6.

Nationals vs Phillies Prediction
The MLB odds favor the Phillies, though not by as great of a margin as their records might suggest.
Harper’s absence and an untested Philadelphia starter contribute to that.
The home team is the better pick in this game, with worries on the mound aside. That’s because Washington’s Espino is far from a competent starter himself.
