Teams Enter With Identical Records
The Baltimore Orioles look to continue a successful road trip, beginning a three-game Pacific Northwest with the Seattle Mariners Monday night. Baltimore is 3-1 on its current swing. though losing to the Chicago White Sox Sunday. Baltimore’s last in the AL East standings. Seattle had its five-game winning streak snapped with a fight-filled loss to the Los Angeles Angels Sunday. That Mariners are in fourth place in the AL West. Both teams have been playing well of late, so this should be an intriguing series between the clubs.

Bird’s Been the Word
The Baltimore Orioles have been playing extremely well over the last three weeks, going 10-5 over their last 15. Unfortunately, the Orioles are in a stacked AL East, where every other team goes into Monday’s action at least eight games above .500.
Righthander Tyler Wells will try to get the Orioles off to a good start in this series takes the mound. Wells is 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 starts this season, striking out 40 in 64⅔ innings. He was brilliant in his last start, earning a win over the Washington Nationals last Wednesday. He threw five shutout innings, having surrendered three hits, while striking out four and walking four.
Outfielder Cedric Mullins was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss Sunday. Mullins had seven hits over the four games against the Chicago White Sox. He is batting .254, 16 doubles, a triple, six home runs, 28 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
Outfielder Austin Mays had his four-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-4 effort. Mays leads the Orioles with a .284 batting average and 44 RBIs. Add in 19 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs and 38 runs scored.
Mariners’ Brawlgame
The Seattle Mariners were going for their second straight series sweep Sunday afternoon. One close pitch near Julio Rodriguez in the first inning, then Jesse Winker getting hit in the second sparked a brawl that cost the team three of the top four hitters in its order. WInker, Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford were among eight players and managers tossed after the fight with the Los Angeles Angels, all but commandeering Seattle’s chance for a sixth victory in a row.
“That probably shouldn’t happen in the game, what happened out there today,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “Emotions running high, but it was pretty clear what was going on. They switched, put an opener in there to throw some balls at us. Got out of hand from there, and kind of a black eye.”
All the hitters are expected back Monday night, assuming they’ll appeal any suspensions that could very well be forthcoming. Winker had five hits in the first two games of the series, then was hit in his first at-bat Sunday. He’s batting .230 with 11 doubles, six home runs, 30 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
Seattle’s without first baseman Ty France, it’s most consistent hitter, .316 batting average and 45 RBIs. France also has 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 32 runs scored. He’s out with a forearm injury incurred last week.
Righty George Kirby will make his 10th start in the majors Monday night. The 24-year-old is 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA, striking out 47 in 49 inning.. Kirby did earn his first MLB win against the Baltimore Orioles May 31, six shutout innings. He surrendered four hits, striking out eight and walking one.
Orioles vs Mariners Head-To-Head
The Seattle Mariners have had the better of the Baltimore Orioles over the last few seasons, taking two out of three from Baltimore earlier this season on the road. Seattle has won the series between these teams in the last three seasons they’ve opposed each other, including a 4-3 edge in both 2019 and 2021 (did not meet in 2020).
Despite the overall season series loss a season ago, Baltimore did win the three-game in Seattle, 2-1. The MLB lines have Mariners favored to win the series opener at home.
