Baltimore Eyes Fifth Straight Win Against Washington

What’s Next After Rare Pitcher’s Duel?

The home parks of the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals are less than an hour apart. However, when it comes to the state of the two franchises, there is a world of difference.

Baltimore, which features one of the game’s bright young stars in catcher Adley Rutschman, is very much in play for a playoff spot in the American League this season. As for Washington, only the Colorado Rockies playing and losing an additional game kept the Nationals from having the worst record in the National League.

Both starting rotations are off to tough starts. The Nationals’ starting pitchers are 4-8 with a 4.98 ERA while Baltimore’s starters are 4-3 with a 6.21 ERA.

Baltimore’s Dean Kremer and Washington’s Josiah Gray combined to allow eight hits and one run in 11.2 innings in the series opener.

The Orioles hope to get a boost to their rotation by activating Kyle Bradish from the injured list to make the start for Wednesday’s game. Bradish pitched five innings in a start at Double-A Bowie and said his injured foot feels fine.

Bradish only lasted 1⅔ innings in his first start of the season before going on the injury list. He was 3-2 on the road last year as opposed to 1-5 at home.

MacKenzie Gore, who is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA, is set to start for the Nationals. Gore has struggled with his control as he had 88 pitches in 3.2 innings in his last start.

According to MLB news, shortstop Ramon Urias is questionable for Baltimore while relief pitcher John Means is on the 60-day injured list.

For the Nationals, catcher Israel Pineda, infielders Carter Kieboom and Ildemaro Vargas and outfielder Corey Dickerson are out, as are relief pitchers Victor Arano and Tanner Rainey.

According to the MLB playoff odds, the Orioles are priced at +10000 and the Nationals at +50000 in the odds to win the World Series.

Cedric Starting to Entertain

It has been an interesting start to 2023 for veteran Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins.

Mullins had five hits in the first three games of the season with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs. Mullins had two hits over the next eight games. Now he is back trending in the right direction with hits in each of his last six games. Mullins is batting .429 during that streak with four stolen bases.

Shortstop Jorge Mateo (.500, five extra-base hits, seven RBIs) and Austin Hays (.360 batting average) are the other hot hitters coming into Wednesday’s game.

The MLB betting lines total has gone over in five of the last seven games played by the Orioles.

Candelario Coming On

Infielder Jeimer Candelario was one of the biggest offseason acquisitions for the Nationals after he spent the previous six seasons with the Detroit Tigers.

Candelario was 2-for-14 in his first four games. Since then he is hitting .321 with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. He had four hits with a home run and two RBIs in Sunday’s win over Cleveland. That is the only victory over the last six games for the Nationals. He hit .308 with a pair of doubles against the Orioles in 2022 and had a hit in Tuesday’s loss.

The Las Vegas MLB odds total has gone under in four of the last six games for the Nationals.
