Good Pitching or Bad Offense?

Who Is Next

Strong pitching performances have been the headline of the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks’ first two games of the season – that, or poor hitting.

Let’s check the latest MLB Picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB Odds for Padres vs Diamondbacks. We’ve plenty of MLB Predictions.

Padres vs Diamondbacks Picks

San Diego Rolling Now?

You have to give the Padres credit; they did a nice job of bouncing back on Friday, picking up the 3-0 win behind an absolute gem from Sean Manaea (7.0 IP, 0 H, 7K).

It would have been easy for San Diego to come out flat, considering they gave up four runs in the 9th in Thursday’s 4-2 Opening Day loss, completely spoiling Yu Darvish’s season debut of 6.0 IP of no-hit ball.

It’s been two great pitching performances from the Padres to open the season, and now Joe Musgrove gets his turn to continue the trend.

Ironically it’s the one-year anniversary of Musgrove throwing the first no-hitter in San Diego history when he blanked the Rangers 3-0 while adding 10 K’s. Musgrove was 11-9 with a 3.18 ERA last season and was 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA vs. Arizona in two starts last year.

Arizona Offense Struggling

Seth Beer hit a 3-run blast on Thursday night to send Arizona to a 4-2 win, which is a positive thing. So far through two games, the Diamondbacks have managed just five hits, though, and are extremely lucky to be 1-1 right now.

Arizona was stymied to just two hits on Friday, and the San Diego bullpen went two scoreless innings to regain confidence after Thursday’s meltdown.

Diamondbacks’ pitching hasn’t been horrible, holding the Padres to five runs over the first two games of the season. San Diego did manage 11 hits on Friday night but could only manage three runs.

Starter Merrill Kelly did go just 4.0 IP, so the Arizona bullpen could be a little taxed heading into Zach Davies’ start on Saturday. Davies needs a bounce back after a rough year in Chicago when he went 6-12 with a 5.78 ERA.

Padres vs Diamondbacks Head-to-Head

San Diego could very easily be 2-0 heading into Saturday’s game if not for Thursday’s bullpen implosion.

When betting online, keep in mind that the Padres went 11-8 vs. Arizona last season despite the fact that the Diamondbacks were 52-110 on the year, the worst team in the majors.

Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Prediction

Musgrove is next in line to toss a gem against this struggling Arizona offense. The Padres definitely have the pitching advantage in Saturday’s matchup as Davies was horrible last year with the Cubs.

The San Diego offense has had its share of issues to begin the season, but this is very much a ‘get right’ matchup.

Manny Machado is just 1-8 to start the season, but he should be able to have a breakout game in this spot. Once Machado gets going, the rest of the San Diego offense will follow. Unless he made some major changes in the offseason, Davies cannot be trusted in this spot.
