Both Have Been Surprising
There were a lot of expectations going into this season for the San Diego Padres, with decent MLB playoff odds in the preseason. So far, they have not shown that, struggling early with a lackluster offense.
On the other hand, the Arizona Diamondbacks have surprised MLB lines by starting hot and remaining at the top of the National League West. It is unclear how sustainable this will be, but it is a step in the right direction.
The NL West rivals will start their second series on Thursday in Arizona. The Padres will have Michael Wacha on the mound with two wins despite a 6.06 ERA. He will go up against Ryne Nelson for the Diamondbacks with a 3.71 ERA through three starts.
Padres Offensive Slump
With the names on the Padres roster, it is hard to imagine them going through a slump like this, but these last few games have been bad. It is now three straight series losses, a 3-7 record, with the offense primarily to blame. Two of the wins were the only games where the Padres scored more than three runs, the third was a 1-0 shutout.
Some of this could be the quality of pitching the Padres faced up against the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, and Atlanta Braves, some of the top teams in baseball. However, with players like Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, and Juan Soto leading the lineup, MLB odds are often still in their favor.

Machado, who has struggled with a .241 batting average and one homer, made MLB news by talking about the team’s offensive deficiencies. Fernando Tatis Jr. will be returning from his 80-game PED suspension, possibly in the first game of this series, and may spark the offense.
Wacha looked good in his first two starts, going six innings each, allowing a combined four runs with 12 strikeouts. However, his last start was shaky, giving up seven runs in 4.1 innings.
Diamondbacks on NL West Top
Not many people had the Diamondbacks in their MLB picks being the top team in the NL West. However, this is where we are, and the team has been playing pretty well since the start of the season. Arizona has only lost one series, winning the last one 2-1 against St. Louis.
The success has come from a mix of solid starting pitching and being good at the plate with runs in scoring position, where the Diamondbacks‘ batting average is the sixth best at .298. While the scoring opportunities have not been plentiful, Arizona has done an excellent job of doing enough to take advantage. Lourdes Gurriel has been a big part of that, with eight RBIs with runners in scoring position.
The starting pitching has also gotten the job done. Three starters have under 4.00 ERAs, including Nelson. He has at least gone through five innings in his three starts, giving up no more than three runs. He has not been a strikeout pitcher, only 10, but hasn’t given up many home runs, two.

It’s hard to back the Padres with how they look at the plate. The Diamondbacks have at least been able to show they can put up runs while having solid pitching to back them up.
This might be a low-scoring game, but Arizona should have enough to win.
