Nelson Looks To Stifle Padres Again
Ryne Nelson will try to continue the impressive start to his Major League Baseball career Sunday when the Arizona Diamondbacks play the series finale against the San Diego Padres.
The 24-year-old has thrown 13 scoreless innings while posting a win and a no-decision. The right-hander beat the Padres in his career debut September. 5 by allowing just four hits in seven innings and then shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers over six innings in a game the Diamondbacks eventually lost.
The longest scoreless innings streak to start a career is held by Brad Ziegler, who threw 39 scoreless innings as a reliever for the Oakland A’s in 2008.
Darvish Trying To Pitch Padres into Postseason
The San Diego Padres will counter Nelson with their best pitcher in Yu Darvish, who needs two wins to match his career high of 16 victories set in his rookie season with the Texas Rangers in 2012. The 36-year-old, who last posted double-digit wins in 2014, has beaten the Diamondbacks the last three times he has faced them this season.
In each game, he gave up three earned runs while being touched up for a total of five home runs. His first win over them came after allowing one earned run in seven innings and he also faced them in his first start of the season, tossing six hitless and scoreless innings in a no decision. Darvish is 6-3 with a 3.84 ERA in 14 career starts against the Diamondbacks, including 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA in six starts at Chase Field.
Darvish recently surpassed 3,000 strikeouts combined in both MLB and Japan, where he starred for seven years with the Nippon Ham Fighters. Darvish and Hideo Nomo are the only pitchers with 3,000 combined strikeouts and at least 1,000 in each league.
McCarthy Standing Out for Diamondbacks
Jake McCarthy is still considered a rookie for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the difference between his first and second seasons has been night and day.
The outfielder has batted .335 over the last three months and .367 in September and only a cold streak will stop him from hitting .300 for the season.
Add in 18 stolen bases against just twice caught stealing and McCarthy is the eighth best rookie in MLB according to fangraphs’ WAR (2.4). This after he struggled to a .220 average and 23 strikeouts in 59 at bats last season.
The former first-round pick out of Virginia, is also one of the few Diamondbacks’ hitters bringing it against the Padres this season as he has hit over .300 against them as well. McCarthy has some competition from other young outfielders with the Diamondbacks in Corbin Carroll, Alex Thomas, Daulton Varsho and Stone Garrett, but so far none of them have distinguished themselves the way that he has this season.
Padres vs Diamondbacks Head-to-Head
With a 2-0 win Saturday, the Padres moved to 13-5 against the Diamondbacks and are assured of their first winning record at Arizona since 2012. A win Sunday would give them six wins in Arizona in a season for just the second time in the 25-year history of the rivalry.
