Padres Can’t Get Offense Going

The San Diego Padres once again struggled to put runs on the board in Saturday’s loss, managing only two runs despite out-hitting the Dodgers 10-7. After scoring a total of two runs in the first two games of the series, San Diego had more troubles in Saturday’s contest, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 men on base.

Designated hitter Luke Voit was 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run. Voit is batting .232 with 14 doubles, 10 home runs, 34 RBIs, and 29 runs scored in his first season with the Padres.

Third baseman Manny Machado had a hit and drew a walk but also struck out twice. The NL MVP contender is batting .324 to rank fourth in baseball while also hitting 18 doubles and 12 home runs, driving in 46 runs and scoring 49 times.

Rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore will be on the mound. Gore is 4-3 with a 3.34 ERA in 11 starts and 12 appearances, striking out 65 in 59⅓ innings. Gore was fantastic in his last start, facing the Philadelphia Phillies on June 24 and throwing five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out four and walking four.

Dodgers Power Their Way To Win

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been getting some great pitching in this series, but on Saturday night, it was the offense grabbing the headlines, with the team hitting three home runs in the first inning of a 7-2 victory. One of those home runs was hit by Freddie Freeman, his sixth since June 11.

“I’m doing nothing different. I wish I had a specific answer. I’m just seeing the ball and it’s falling in right now,” Freeman said after Saturday’s win.

In his first season with the Dodgers, Freeman is batting .307 with 25 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 52 runs scored.

Third baseman Justin Turner also had a night, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Turner is batting .229 with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 43 RBIs, and 35 runs scored.

Veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to get the start. The 34-year-old is 5-2 with a 2.94 ERA in nine starts, as he’s been battling minor injuries. Kershaw dominated the San Diego Padres in his first start against them this season in April, going five innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out three and walking one.

Kershaw is coming off an ugly loss, lasting just four innings against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, allowing six runs on nine hits, including two home runs, while striking out four and walking four.

Padres vs Dodgers Head-To-Head

The Los Angeles Dodgers have dominated the season series with the San Diego Padres this season, taking five of the first six matchups. Los Angeles won the season series 12-7 a year ago and has topped the Padres in the last 11 campaigns.

That dominance has been at Dodger Stadium especially, with Los Angeles on a nine-game winning streak at home against San Diego. That streak is expected to continue according to the MLB lines for Sunday, with the Dodgers a heavy favorite for another victory.
