New York Looks to Level Series

In the postseason last year, the San Diego Padres knocked out the New York Mets in the Wild Card round in Queens. The teams meet in the middle of a three-game set on Tuesday after the Mets won the series opener. It is an early-season matchup between two talented teams with many expectations for 2023.

The Mets won the first game in a 5-0 shutout behind an excellent pitching performance from Max Scherzer. He had struggled in his first two starts but looked dominant on Monday. Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor had two RBIs each.

The pitching matchup for Tuesday’s game will be between Ryan Weathers and David Peterson, both southpaws that have yet to register a win this season. The MLB lines reflect the possibility for a big offensive night with a scoring total over/under set at nine.

Fast Start for Padres Bats

The San Diego Padres’ offense has played a role in getting this team to a solid start. They are in the top 10 in runs and home runs in the league, having put their offense on full display in the last series against a very good Atlanta Braves. San Diego scored at least four runs in every game, winning the series 3-1 and closing it out with a 10-2 blowout.

Two free agent signings have played pivotal roles, with Xander Bogaerts breaking MLB news signing a massive contract and Nelson Cruz playing well. Bogaerts has a batting average of .325 with three HRs and eight RBIs. Cruz hasn’t been playing every day but is doing well with every opportunity, leading the team in RBIs and adding in three homers.

Weathers was solid in his first start of the season, going five innings with two strikeouts and only allowing two runs. He only had one start in 2022 and is the back end of the rotation piece. His first start was promising, but it could be a challenge facing this Mets lineup.

Mets Still Looking for Boost

The New York Mets find themselves in a peculiar position. New York has had to deal with injuries to star pitcher Justin Verlander and, outside of Pete Alonso, a lot of the batting order is struggling. Alonso has hit five home runs to help get to a team-high 11 RBIs, but no other player is close to touching those numbers.

The MLB odds have shifted a little back in the Mets‘ favor after a good hitting performance on Monday night. With Alonso going 0-for-4, the rest of the big names in the lineup were able to come through, specifically McNeil and Lindor.

The pitching has struggled, partially due to the injuries. Not having Verlander for this opening part of the season and closer Edwin Díaz out for the year changes how sportsbooks view this team. The team’s ERA is ranked 14th, and if it wasn’t for four good starts from Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill, it could look different.

Peterson will get the nod against the Padres for his third start of the season. In nine innings pitched, he has given up 13 hits, walked six batters, and allowed six runs. The bright side is that he has 10 strikeouts, but it has been underwhelming.

Neither team has star pitchers on the mound, giving no team a clear advantage. However, the big difference between these teams is that the Padres lineup has been finding success until being shut out on Monday.

The Mets’ lineup has been up and down while the Padres’ have shown a more consistent ability to score runs. That should help the Padres be the better choice for MLB picks.
