Stars Deliver To Keep Season Alive For Mets

Musgrove, Bassitt Get Call in Decisive Game 3

Jacob deGrom and Edwin Diaz came through in the most pressure-packed game of the season for the New York Mets and now it will be Chris Bassitt getting the ball in the winner-take-all contest for the New York Mets. The Padres’ Joe Musgrove will oppose Bassitt.

This isn’t exactly a matchup of pitchers with histories of postseason success.  Musgrove had an ERA of 8.10 while pitching in seven games in relief for the Houston Astros in 2017 while Bassitt started two games for the Oakland Athletics in the 2020 playoffs. He was 1-0 with an ERA of 3.27.

Padres vs Mets Picks

The Padres were 5-2 against the Mets this season before Saturday’s 7-3 loss so even with San Diego on the road, they should have some confidence coming into the game. The winner will advance to meet a rested Los Angeles Dodgers team that had the most wins in the majors during the regular season.

According to the MLB playoff odds, the Mets are priced at +1000 and the Padres come in at +1200 in the odds to win the World Series.

Let’s check the latest MLB odds, stats, injury reports, and MLB lines for Padres vs Mets. We’ve plenty of MLB Vegas odds for you to consider.

Unlikely Offensive Stars Emerging for the Padres

While Manny Machado and Juan Soto are the biggest names in the San Diego batting lineup, it has been Jurickson Profar, Austin Nola and Trent Grisham who have been leading the way during the first two games of the series.

Profar is tied for the MLB postseason lead with four RBIs to go with a .429 average. Grisham is batting .333 with two home runs and Nola is also hitting .333.

Machado and Soto are just 3 for 16 with six strikeouts. Soto had eight extra-base hits in 17 postseason games during the Washington Nationals’ run to the 2019 World Series title. However, Machado has a .195 career average in 31 career playoff games.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone over in San Diego’s last five games.

Alonso, Lindor Come Through for the Mets

Two road teams had already swept the first-round playoff series and the stars of the New York Mets did everything in their power to make sure that the visiting Padres weren’t going to be celebrating on Saturday night,

Francisco Lindor opened the scoring with a home run in the first inning and a home run by Pete Alonso in the fifth inning gave the Mets the lead for good. National League batting champion Jeff McNeil added a two-run double during a four-run seventh inning as the Mets evened the best of three game series with a 7-3 win.

It was quite the bounce-back game for the Mets’ Nos. 2, 3 and 4 hitters who were 2 for 11 in the series-opening loss.

The MLB betting lines total has gone over in seven of the Mets’ last eight games at home. The total is set at 6½ for this contest.

Padres vs Mets Head-to-Head

San Diego went 4-2 against the Mets during the regular season and won both series. Counting the postseason, the Mets have scored 26 runs in the three victories against the Padres compared to five runs in the five losses.

Just three of the last 18 games between the teams have been decided by one run.

Musgrove allowed five hits and four runs in 5⅓ innings in his only previous start against the Mets in 2022. Profar is 6 for 22 with three extra-base hits over his last six games against the Mets.

Bassitt was 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in two starts against the Padres during the regular season. Alonso hit .500 against the Padres during the regular season.

Padres vs Mets Prediction

The teams split the first two games with the Padres hitting three home runs in the first five innings in Game 1 while four of the runs for the Mets in Game 2 coming on two solo homers and a double.

Bassitt’s struggles against the Padres in the regular season are a concern for the Mets faithful. However, seeing leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo continue his hot streak with three hits in Game 2 was encouraging.

Musgrove has allowed one run over his last four starts and that includes two strong outings against 2022 playoff teams. Bassitt has a 3.89 ERA over his last six starts with four of those outings coming against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs.

Is this the night when Machado finally comes through in the postseason? He is too talented of a hitter to be batting under .200 in the playoffs during his career.

The Mets might be the home team, but with the way the starting pitchers finished the regular season, it is hard to pick against the Padres in this one.
