Picks, Prediction for Padres vs Nationals on Tuesday, May 23
The San Diego Padres had been hoping to contend for the National League pennant, but as we move toward the end of month of May, they’re just one-win better than the lowly Washington Nationals.
Are the struggling Padres a good bet versus the MLB odds to pick up the win on Tuesday or are the Nationals a live dog in this spot?
Can Padres Build Off Win?
The San Diego Padres have been brutal to those who bet online over the last couple of weeks. This is a team that’s lost 11 of their last 14 games – many of which they were favored on the MLB betting lines.
About the only good news here is that they earned a confidence-building 7-0 win on Sunday over the Boston Red Sox. While the win merely avoided what would have been a series sweep, the fact that they picked it up and then had a day off might give them an opportunity to regroup.
Nationals Surprisingly Competitive
Nobody making their MLB picks this year expected the Washington Nationals to be a playoff contender. However, the team has been surprisingly competitive over the last month or so. This team started 4-11. Since then, they are 16-16.
Those numbers might not look all that impressive, but when you consider that they’re often an underdog in the sportsbook, this team is returning good value. Those who bet online should note that the team is +4.0 units on the season. We’ll see if they can continue to surprise in this series.
Starting Pitchers
Ryan Weathers (1-2, 3.42 ERA) vs MacKenzie Gore (3-3, 3.69)
The Padres will give the ball to Weathers in this one and he’s delivered mixed results on the season. He has a 3.42 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, but is fresh off his worst start.
Weathers had allowed five earned runs in his first 18.0 innings of work. He coughed up four in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 5.2 innings of work last week.
As for Gore, he has a decent 3.69 ERA on the season but this month hasn’t been great. The Nats have lost all four of his May outings as he’s posted a 4.66 ERA.
Padres vs Nationals Head-to Head
These two teams play about two series per year and the Padres have had a small edge of late.
They went 4-3 in the 2022 meetings and 4-3 in 2021.
