Milwaukee has dropped four in a row and is hanging onto the lead in the NL Central by just a half-game over the second-place St. Louis Cardinals. These teams have played some tight games this season, so before you decide how you want to bet online on this one, read our in-depth preview of the contest.
Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports and MLB odds for Phillies vs Brewers. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.
Surging Phillies Finding Ways to Win
It would have been easy for the Philadelphia Phillies to concede the series opener on Tuesday, entering the ninth inning down 2-1 and facing Milwaukee Brewers closer to Josh Hader. But Philadelphia hit a pair of solo home runs off Hader, snapping his streak of 40 straight regular-season scoreless appearances to earn a 3-2 victory and improve to 4-0 since firing manager Joe Girardi on Friday.
“We believe this is a good club and the pieces are here to win games,” Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson said after Tuesday’s win. “Maybe we’re getting on a roll.”
Trying to keep that roll going on Wednesday will be right-hander Aaron Nola, making his 12th start. Nola is 3-4 with a 3.92 ERA, ranking fifth in the majors with 79 strikeouts in 66.2 innings. Nola took a no-decision in his first meeting with the Brewers, throwing seven shutout innings of one-hit ball, striking out nine and walking one.
Third baseman Alex Bohm had the game-tying home run on Tuesday night. Bohm is batting .262 with six doubles, a triple, four home runs, 20 RBIs and 27 runs scored.
Designated hitter Bryce Harper was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the series opener. Harper is batting .309 this season, hitting 19 doubles, a triple, and 13 home runs, driving in 41 runs and scoring 39 times.
Brewers Can’t Get a Victory
The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the better teams in the National League, but they are suddenly slumping, losing a season-high four straight and six of their last seven. The offense has been a problem, with Milwaukee averaging just 1.5 runs over the four-game slide.
Milwaukee will have right-hander Adrian Houser on the mound for the second game of the series. Houser is 3-5 with a 3.51 ERA in 10 starts, striking out 41 in 51⅓ innings. Houser took a no-decision in his last outing, going five innings against the San Diego Padres on Thursday and allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking three.
Outfielder Christian Yelich was 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Tuesday night. The former NL MVP is batting just .224 with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 21 RBIs, and 33 runs scored.
First baseman Rowdy Tellez had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in one of the Brewers’ runs on Tuesday night. Tellez is tied for 13th in baseball with his 37 RBIs, adding 13 doubles, 10 home runs, and 21 runs scored.
Phillies vs Brewers Head-to-Head
The season series between these two teams is tied at two wins apiece, as the Milwaukee Brewers took two of the three games in the first series of the season. The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for their second straight season series victory over the Brewers, having won five of the seven matchups in 2021.
Last season snapped a two-series streak of wins for Philadelphia in Milwaukee, with the Phillies winning two of three on the road in 2018 and 2019 (the two teams didn’t play in 2020). The MLB lines are favoring the Phillies to get the win on Wednesday to clinch the series.
