Home Opener for Marlins
The Miami Marlins host the Philadelphia Phillies in the first of a four-game weekend series between the National League East rivals on Thursday. Miami is off to a slow start and comes into its home opener on a three-game losing streak. Philadelphia has also stumbled early, having dropped its last two games in a home series against the New York Mets.
Both teams are desperate to get back to winning, so make sure you check out our in-depth preview of this game before you decide how you want to bet online.
Phillies Try to Keep Optimistic
The early going of the season can get a team down if it gets off to a bad start, and the Philadelphia Phillies are trying to avoid just that. Despite dropping three of its last four, Philadelphia is trying to keep positive heading into a seven-game road trip.
“I think we showed a lot of fight,” Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber said after Wednesday’s loss to the New York Mets. “We showed we weren’t going to give in just because we were losing late. I think that’s the positive takeaway. There are things personally that I need to do better. But there are positives. We got a series win against the A’s. We played the Mets hard here. Obviously, we’re disappointed we lost the series. We wanted to win two of three. But there are a lot of positives.”
Schwarber has really struggled, batting just .091 through six games. He’s struck out eight times, one of six Phillies regulars to record at least a strikeout in each game.
Second baseman Jean Segura has been a consistent threat for Philadelphia. He has a team-high .353 batting average with a double, two home runs, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Right-hander Kyle Gibson makes his second start of the season after a sterling debut. Facing the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, Gibson went seven innings, allowing no runs and two hits while striking out 10 and walking none.
Marlins Hope Home is Where Runs are
The Miami Marlins have been having trouble scoring over the first week of the 2022 season, managing a total of 14 runs over five games, with five coming in the season opener. Miami is batting .199 overall and has a team on-base percentage of .264, – not exactly a recipe for runs.
Outfielder Jesus Sanchez leads the way with a .250 batting average. He’s hit two home runs, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Outfielder Jorge Soler is one of the players struggling the most with nine strikeouts in 19 at-bats and a .158 batting average. He has walked four times, but the Marlins need his bat to heat up in a hurry.
Right-hander Sandy Alcantara will get the start for the Marlins on Thursday. Alcantara went three innings in his first start of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings of a no-decision against the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
Phillies vs Marlins Head-to-Head
The Miami Marlins have won the season series against the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies in each of the last three years. Miami took 10 of 19 matchups a season ago, including six of 10 at its home park.
Philadelphia last had a winning record on the road against the Marlins in 2016. That trend may be why the MLB lines are leaning toward Miami winning the series opener.
