Philadelphia Trying To Keep Pace With NL East Leaders

The New York Mets look for a second straight victory in a weekend series with the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies when the teams clash again on Saturday night. New York took the opener in a combined no-hitter to improve to an MLB-best 15-6 and maintain a three-game lead in the NL East over the second-place Miami Marlins.

Philadelphia had a four-game winning streak snapped with the setback and is tied for third place with the Atlanta Braves. Before you make any bet online on the second game of this series, make sure you read our in-depth preview to get some insight into this contest.

Let’s check the latest MLB Picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB Odds for Phillies vs Mets. We’ve plenty of MLB Predictions.

Phillies Look To Get Offense Back in Gear

The Philadelphia Phillies came into Friday night’s series opener having averaged 8.0 runs in a four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies, but they couldn’t record a hit against the New York Mets. That will certainly change on Saturday, as Philadelphia is ready to break out.

Outfielder Bryce Harper had been heating up before an 0-for-3 showing, recording hits in each game of the Colorado series. Harper is batting .266 with seven doubles, a triple, three home runs, 14 RBIs, and 17 runs scored.

Outfielder Nick Castellanos has gone hitless over the last two games but is still batting .303 to lead the Phillies. Castellanos has five doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs, and 11 runs scored in his first season with Philadelphia.

One problem for the Phillies this season has been strikeouts, with the team tied for 10th in baseball with 181. Five players — Harper, Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, and Kyle Schwarber — have each struck out 21 times or more.

Right-hander Kyle Gibson will be on the mound for the Phillies. Gibson is 2-1 with a 3.47 ERA in four starts, striking out 23 and walking seven in 23⅓ innings of work. Gibson picked up a win in his last outing, going 5⅔ innings against the Rockies on Monday and allowing two runs on three hits, including two home runs while striking out four and walking two.

Mets Putting It Together In Early Going Of Season

The New York Mets have been the best team in baseball in the early going of the 2022 campaign, and they became the first team with a no-hitter this season on Friday night. Starter Tylor Megill and four relievers combined to record just the second no-hitter in franchise history.

“Just a really fun team moment,” Mets first baseman Pete Alonso said. “This is one of my all-time highlights, because, like, how often do you see a no-hitter? It’s like seeing a white buffalo or a unicorn.”

Trying to follow up that gem will be right-hander Taijuan Walker, making his second start. Walker has been sidelined with right shoulder bursitis since his first start on April 11, also against the Philadelphia Phillies. Walker threw two perfect innings with four strikeouts in that outing but had to be pulled because their shoulder was bothering him.

Alonso had a home run in Friday’s win, tying for the team lead with four and improving his team-best RBI total to 17. Alonso is batting .259 with three doubles and 11 runs scored as well.

Second baseman Jeff McNeil has been hot, raising his batting average to .344 with a 2-for-3 night on Friday. McNeil is 8-for-14 over his last five games with three doubles, a triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

Phillies vs Mets Head-to-Head

The New York Mets have the edge in the season series with the Philadelphia Phillies, taking three of the first four meetings between the  clubs. It’s a different story from the last three seasons when Philadelphia won the season series over its division rival.

Playing in New York, the Mets won six of the 10 contests in 2021 after the teams split four meetings at Citi Field in 2020. The MLB lines expect the home team’s success to continue on Saturday, with the Mets getting the slight edge.

Phillies vs Mets Prediction

How well Walker can pitch is a question mark, but the New York Mets are on a roll right now, and it’s hard to see that ending in this one. Gibson will keep the Philadelphia Phillies in this one for a bit, but keep rolling with the best team in baseball.

When doing your MLB betting, take New York to get the win at home.
