Slumping Philadelphia Battling for Final Wild Card

Phillies Skid into Doubleheader

The Philadelphia Phillies try to get back to winning when they face the host Washington Nationals in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday night. Philadelphia entered the day with just a half-game lead on the Milwaukee Brewers for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

Washington had won two of its last four but still has the worst record in baseball. Both teams have been a little unpredictable of late, so make sure to read our in-depth preview of the nightcap of this doubleheader before you do any betting online.

Let’s check the latest MLB odds, stats, injury reports and MLB lines for Phillies vs Nationals. We’ve plenty of Vegas MLB odds for you to consider.

Phillies Know Fate is in their Hands

Despite the five-game losing streak, the Phillies still entered Friday with an advantage on the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card race. Still, the team has to get things going in the right direction in a hurry, or it could find itself out of the postseason party.

We’re still in it,” Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper said after Thursday’s loss to the Chicago Cubs. “We have seven games left. We’ve got a road ahead of us, but we’ve got to keep playing, got to keep going, not having a mindset about losing and thinking about that.”

Harper was 3-for-4 on Thursday, finishing with half of the Phillies’ hits in the game. Harper is batting .294 with 28 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs, 64 RBIs, and 62 runs scored in 93 games this season.

Right-hander Noah Syndergaard will start in the second game of the day on Friday. Syndergaard is 9-10 with a 4.12 ERA in 23 starts and 24 overall appearances, splitting time between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Angels. He appeared in relief in his last outing, going two innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sept. 21 and allowing no runs on three hits while striking out two and walking none.

Nationals Playing for Pride

The Nationals haven’t been pushovers in the regular season’s final weeks, including their last series, when they came back after a pair of blowout losses to the Atlanta Braves to win in 10 innings on Wednesday. It was the second win in four tries against the defending World Series champion Braves, showing the Philadelphia Phillies shouldn’t expect an easy time this weekend.

Washington named rookie right-hander Tommy Romero to start the second game of the doubleheader. It will be essentially a bullpen game as Romero has not pitched more than two innings in any of his three appearances.

Shortstop CJ Abrams was 3-for-5 on Wednesday, including driving in the game-winning run in the 10th inning with a single. The 21-year-old rookie came to the Washington Nationals in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres and is batting .254 with six doubles, two triples, 10 RBIs, and 16 runs scored in 38 games with Washington.

Another player who came to the team in that trade, first baseman Luke Voit, drove in the first two runs of the game for Washington on Wednesday. Voit is batting .244 with four doubles, eight home runs, 19 RBIs, and 14 runs scored in 46 games with the Nationals.

Phillies vs Nationals Head-to-Head

The Philadelphia Phillies have dominated the season series against the Washington Nationals, going 13-2 against their division rivals heading into the weekend series. Philadelphia also won the season series in 2021 with a 13-6 against the Nationals.

The Phillies have felt at home at Nationals Park in recent seasons, going 16-5 at the venue since the start of the 2020 campaign. The MLB lines for Friday’s second game of the doubleheader favor Philadelphia to continue that success with yet another win.
