Dominance on Display
The Chicago Cubs will meet the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday for the finale of a three-game series that has been completely dominated by the home team.
The first pitch is set for 7:40 p.m. ET inside Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.
The Pirates’ Poor Performances
Pittsburgh was never expected to do much in the National League Central, but it has been totally embarrassed by Chicago in the first two games of the series, losing 9-0 and 7-0.
It is not as if they are severely outmatched — the Pirates’ 15-21 record is only a half-game worse than Chicago’s.
The Pirates defied popular MLB picks by taking two of three games from the National League-leading Los Angeles Dodgers last week.
Ke’Bryan Hayes has been the out-and-out leader for Pittsburgh’s offense, although this is not saying much for a team that, as a whole, ranks near the bottom of the league in batting average, home runs and total scoring. The Pirates have yet to score more than five runs in a game in the month of May.
Mitch Keller (0-5, 6.61 ERA) is likely to get the start after allowing five earned runs in each of his last two starts in what has been a forgettable season.
Cubs Finding Momentum
The Chicago Cubs are not a great baseball team, but they have played great in the current series. Moments like these can often catalyze struggling teams and spur them on to a mini-winning streak.
Chicago is still just 15-20, but it will be salivating at the prospect of shutting out its division rival in three straight games.
Patrick Wisdom has handled the heavy lifting for the offense, though he has been very inconsistent. Frank Schwindel and Jonathan Villar were the heroes of Tuesday’s game. Ian Happ and Willson Contreras led the charge in the series opener, the latter, by smacking a first-inning blast.
Drew Smyly (1-4, 3.64 ERA) will get the start for the home team with the artificial pressure of wanting to blank the Pirates.
Pirates vs Cubs Head-to-Head
Despite the results from the current series, the Pirates hold a 4-3 advantage over the Cubs in 2022 matchups.
The Cubs ended up on the winning end of last season’s series 14.5.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago Cubs Prediction
Styles make fights. At least, that is the old adage. However, it is hard to see past the obvious, which is that the Cubs have not allowed a single run to the Pirates in this series.
Chicago, for what it’s worth, has struggled both offensively and defensively, but it has found the magic formula in this series, and when bad teams can grasp any sort of momentum, that is what tends to happen.
For that reason and that reason alone, side with the wisdom of the MLB odds and take the Cubs to close out the series with a third straight win, albeit maybe not via a shutout.
