Pirates Try to Regain NL Central Lead
When the season began, the MLB picks had the Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles being overshadowed by teams in their own division. However, the Orioles have the second-best record in the American League while the Pirates are tied for the fourth-best mark in the National League heading into the second of a three-game series.
The Pirates wasted a solid start by Johan Oviedo as a bullpen meltdown cost them in the series opener.
Despite walking five Baltimore batters, Oviedo allowed just one run in five innings and left with a 1-0 lead. After Baltimore tied the game on a Connor Joe home run, things began to unravel with Jose Hernandez and Duane Underwood Jr. combining to allow five hits and five runs in two innings as the Pirates fell out of first place in the NL Central Division.
Not too long ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates were defying the MLB predictions by having the best record in the National League. However, the Pirates have lost 10 of the last 11 games. Seven of those losses came to American East teams.
Baltimore has won three games in a row and is now just four games behind Tampa Bay in the American League East. Relievers Bryan Baker and Felix Bautista combined to strike out five of the six batters they faced.
The Orioles are 7-3 in May even though they played six games against teams with the best record in the American League and National League.
Roansy Contreras is set to start for the Pirates. After allowing three runs in 18⅔ innings over a three-game stretch, he has surrendered 15 hits, two home runs, nine runs with seven walks and seven strikeouts over 10⅓ innings in his last two appearances. This will be his first game against Baltimore, In 2022, he was 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA in four games against American League East teams.
Tyler Wells, who is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA this season, will get the start for the Orioles.. He has allowed two runs or less in three of his last four starts. He is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in nine career games against National League teams.
According to MLB news, first baseman Ji-Man Choi and shortstop Oneil Cruz are joined by relief pitcher Jalin Garcia on the 60-day injured list for the Pirates while relief pitcher Rob Zastryzny is also out.
Shortstop Ramon Urias and relief pitchers Mychal Givens and John Means are out for the Orioles.
According to the MLB playoff odds, Baltimore is priced at +6000 in the odds to win the World Series. The Pirates come in at +8000 in the championship odds.
Looking to Pitch In
Only the Washington Nationals have walked more batters than the 43 bases on balls issues by the Pirates pitchers in May.
The Pirates are 1-9 with a 4.92 ERA during the month. The starting pitchers are 1-7 with a 4.38 ERA and the bullpen is 0-2 with a 5.71 ERA so there is plenty of blame to go around.
The bullpen numbers would look even worse if not for the fact that closer David Bednar has teamed with fellow relievers Colin Holderman, Yohan Ramirez and Dauri Moreta to allow no runs and four hits in 15.1 innings during the month.
The MLB betting lines total has gone under in just two of Pittsburgh’s last seven games.
Cedric the Entertainer
Since the franchise relocated to Baltimore in 1954, only six Orioles have hit for the cycle – until Friday night.
Outfielder Cedric Mullins had a single in the third inning, a triple in the fifth inning, doubled and scored the tying run in the seventh and then hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to push a one-run advantage into a four-run lead for the Orioles.

The four hits were a season high for Mullins. He is hitting .300 with seven extra-base hits, six runs and 10 RBIs in 10 games in May.
After seeing his average dip to .163 after going 0-for-3 in an April 11 win over Oakland, he is batting.316 with seven doubles, three triples and four home runs.
The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in four of the Orioles’ last five games.
