Mariners Try To Bounce Back From Shutout Loss
The Seattle Mariners (83-70) continue their three-game series against the Texas Rangers (66-87) on Wednesday. Unlike the Rangers, who were eliminated from the playoffs already, the Mariners have a lot at stake. Seattle is 3½ games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles for the final wild-card spot in the American League. With seven games left after this series, the Mariners need to make the most of their opportunities against the Rangers. Can they bounce back after getting shut out in Game 1?
Rangers’ Perez Struggling
The Rangers may be the inferior team here, but have a solid edge on the mound. Martin Perez (12-6, 2.90 ERA) is having a phenomenal year in Texas Rangers and might be their best arm. However, the veteran left-hander has slowed since the Rangers were eliminated from contention. In his previous two starts, Perez allowed six combined runs and 14 hits over 11⅓ innings to the Los Angeles Angels and Tampa Bay Rays.
It’s hard to assume that Perez will pick it up at this point in a lost season, but he can match a career-high in victories. He also has solid numbers against the Mariners this season. In three starts spanning 17 innings, Perez is 0-0 with a 2.12 ERA and .215 opponents batting average. His lifetime numbers against this roster aren’t as impressive, though, with a .274 average and .808 OPS in 113 at-bats.
The Texas Rangers aren’t helpless as they rank 11th in the MLB in runs and ninth in home runs. But they are 3-6 in the previous nine games and haven’t been scoring at their usual rate.
Mariners Hungry for Wins
With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Seattle Mariners are on the precipice of earning their first playoff berth in more than two decades. But with rookie right-hander George Kirby (7-4, 3.30) on the mound, this game is a toss-up. Kirby has solid season numbers but hasn’t been great in September at 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA. His most recent start was a total disaster against one of the worst teams in baseball. The Oakland Athletics knocked in five runs over 2⅓ innings in the shortest start of his career.
Despite this, Kirby was solid for most of 2022 with strong results against the Rangers. In three starts, Kirby has a 2.16 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 12/2. His career numbers are just as good, with a.184 batting average in 49 at-bats against this roster.
Rangers vs Mariners Head-to-Head
The second game of this series will be the 18th between the Rangers and Mariners in 2022, with Seattle holding a 12-5 overall record. However, the Rangers have won three straight.

Rangers vs Mariners Prediction
We are wary of trusting a struggling Kirby in this spot, especially after his poor showing in Oakland. But it’s hard to ignore his success against the Rangers this season. Furthermore, the M’s are 5-1 straight up at home against the Rangers this season. Kirby is in a great spot to bounce back along with the Mariners.
