Rangers Needing More On The Mound

The Texas Rangers gave up 24 runs over their current three-game losing streak, making it nearly impossible for the offense to keep pace with the opponent. Texas has the worst team ERA in baseball at 6.19 and has allowed the most home runs with 18 despite playing just nine games this season.

Right-hander Jon Gray will get the starting assignment for Tuesday’s series opener. Gray is making his second start of the season, having gone four innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 8 and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four and walking two. Gray is coming off a stint on the injured list with a blister on his right middle finger.

The struggles haven’t been limited to the mound for Texas either, as a number of players being counted on for big production are off to slow starts. One of those is second baseman Marcus Semien, who is batting just .128 with two doubles, two RBIs, and five runs scored.

Outfielder Adolis Garcia has also been having his troubles, leading the team with 11 strikeouts. Garcia is batting just .152 with two home runs, five RBIs, and six runs scored.

Mariners Putting it Together at Home

The Seattle Mariners are having a very good homestand, winning two of three from the Houston Astros and now facing the last-place Texas Rangers for a three-game set. Seattle is getting it done at the plate and on the mound, which was shown again in Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Astros.

Rookie Matt Brash combined with four relievers to shut down Houston, getting four double plays in the first four innings and striking out 10 Astros batters.

“We’ve got guys that can strike people out,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said after Sunday’s win. “We did that last year. Our bullpen struck them out last year. We didn’t have so much of that in our starting rotation, and that’s changed with Robbie Ray, hopefully, Logan Gilbert for a whole year, and what Matt Brash brings. Those guys can wipe you out. Their stuff is so good.”

Ray will get his chance at some more strikeouts when he takes the mound for Tuesday’s opener. Ray is 1-1 with a 4.73 ERA in two starts this season. Ray had a rough outing in his last start, going 6⅓ innings against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday and giving up six runs on 10 hits, including three home runs while striking out four and walking two.

Offensively, Ty France is heating up at the plate for Seattle. The third baseman was 5-for-12 in the series against Houston, including a home run in Sunday’s win. France is batting .289 this season with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, and four runs scored.

Rangers vs Mariners Head-to-Head

The Seattle Mariners have dominated the series between these two AL West rivals over the past two seasons, winning 21 of 29 meetings. Seattle went 13-6 against the Texas Rangers in 2021, including an 8-2 record at home.

In 2020, the two teams played 10 times, with Seattle winning eight of them, including a perfect 7-0 mark at T-Mobile Park. The MLB lines for Tuesday see that trend continuing, with the Mariners favored to open the series with a win.

The Texas Rangers offense has been quiet while its pitching staff has struggled to keep opponents off the board. That’s not a good recipe for success, especially with the Seattle Mariners playing well at home.
