Mariners Looking to Stay Hot Against Slumping Rangers
AL West Rivals Battle In Second Game of Series
The Seattle Mariners go for a third straight win when they host the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night in the second of a three-game series between AL West rivals. Seattle took the opener to improve to 6-5 and tie for third place in the division standings, a half-game behind the first-place Oakland Athletics, and Los Angeles Angels. Texas has dropped four straight and is in last place in the division, 3½ games behind the Mariners and the Houston Astros. This game could go either way in spite of the recent trends. Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for Rangers vs Mariners. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.
Rangers Having Rough Start to Season
Things aren’t working for the Texas Rangers early in the 2022 campaign. The team is last in the league in ERA at 6.24, which has negated its 10th-place total in runs scored.
Right-hander Dane Dunning will try to turn the team’s fortunes around on the mound when he gets the start on Wednesday night. Dunning is 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA this season, having made two starts. His last outing was against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, as he lasted 3⅔ innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking two.
Offensively, Texas has seen disappointing starts from some of its stars. Second baseman Marcus Semien is batting just .143 with three doubles, four RBIs and five runs scored. Semien hit 45 home runs with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, so the expectations when he was acquired in the offseason were high.
Outfielder Adolis Garcia has also failed to live up to expectations early on, hitting just .162 with two home runs, five RBIs and six runs scored. Garcia hit 31 home runs and drove in 90 runs a season ago.
Mariners’ Success Powered from The Mound
The Seattle Mariners are putting together wins over the last few games, and much of that has to do with the team’s pitching staff. Robbie Ray took his turn in Tuesday’s win, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings to get his first win in front of his new home fans after joining the Mariners in the offseason.
“It felt great,” the defending AL Cy Young winner said after Tuesday’s win. “It’s nice to get the first one out of the way and pitch in front of the home fans and be able to come through and get a win for us.”
Next up is 24-year-old right-hander Logan Gilbert, making his third start of the season on Wednesday. Gilbert is 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA over his first two starts. His latest outing was against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, as he went five innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out four and walking none.
Third baseman Eugenio Suarez had a three-run homer in Tuesday’s win and now leads the Mariners in the category with three on the season. Suarez is batting just .189 but has three doubles, eight RBIs and six runs scored.
Shortstop J.P. Crawford leads the team with a .343 batting average. He’s hit three doubles and a triple, driven in one run and scored five times.
Rangers vs Mariners Head-to-Head
The result of the opener of this series was much the same as the results have been for the past couple of seasons between these division rivals, with the Seattle Mariners taking 21 of 29 meetings in 2020 and 2021. Last season saw Seattle win eight of 10 games at home against the Texas Rangers.
The Mariners were even more dominant in 2020, sweeping all seven games played at T-Mobile Park. The MLB lines favor that trend continuing, with Seattle a favorite for Wednesday’s contest as well.
