Rays’ Silent Offense in Loss

The Tampa Bay  Rays haven’t been the most consistent offense in the majors this season, They’re tied in 18th place in runs (203), ranking 22nd in team batting average at .233. The struggles were evident Tuesday night, as it managed just three hits in being blanked for the third time this season, including twice in its last five games.

Shortstop Wander Franco has been the team’s most consistent hitter, batting .270. He’s now on the injured lis with a right quadriceps strain suffered Monday. Franco thus joins second baseman Brandon Lowe (lower back tightness) on the injured list, robbing the team of hitting.

Outfielder Manuel Margot leads the Rays with 23 RBIs this season, but went 0-for-4 in Tuesday’s loss and is hitless in his last seven at-bats over two games. Margot is batting .327 in 33 games with five doubles, a triple, three home runs, 23 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

Left-hander Jeffrey Springs will make his sixth start (14th appearance) of the season Wednesday night. Springs is 2-2 with a 1.62 ERA, striking out 33 in 33⅓ innings. He lost against the New York Yankees last Friday, as he went six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits-including two homers-striking out six and with no walks.

Perez Leads Rangers To Another Win

The Texas Rangers have one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, and Martin Perez continued that display Tuesday night. He silenced the Tampa Bay Rays for seven inning, thus ending complete a magical month on the mound. Perez finished May with an ERA of 0.64 in six starts, the lowest in a month for an AL pitcher (minimum 40 innings) since Minnesota’s Johan Santana’s 0.45 ERA for the Minnesota Twins in September, 2004.

“He’s like a video game,” Rangers’ manager Chris Woodward said of Perez after Tuesday’s win. “Like when you’re playing MLB The Show, you can just click the button and it lands perfect, right where you want, and you know you’re going to get the guy out. That’s the way he’s pitched it. It’s not that easy, but he makes it seem that way. It’s almost like Neo in ‘The Matrix.’ This guy is seeing everything kind of in slow motion right now, and it’s showing up in the results.”

Right-hander Jon Gray tries to follow that with a solid outing as he makes his eighth start. Gray is 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA, striking out 32 over 34 innings. He’s coming off a rough outing against the Oakland Athletics last Friday, surrendering five runs on five hits-including two homers-over six innings, striking out five and walking three.

Outfielder Adolis Garcia had a two-run home run in Tuesday’s win, increasing his team-leading RBI total to 31. Garcia is batting .227 with 10 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 27 runs scored.

Rays vs Rangers Head-to-Head

The Texas Rangers are again looking to win the season series from the Tampa Bay Rays, after a 4-3 record in the 2021 series. Texas lost two-of-three at home to Toronto last season, so it’s off to a better start with its pair of wins to start this set.

Tampa Bay has had success at Globe Life Field in recent season, going 10-5 in the five series at the venue prior to this one. The MLB lines are tepidly favoring the Rays Wednesday night.
