Rays Skidding into Playoffs
The Tampa Bay Rays have clinched a spot in the playoffs while the Boston Red Sox have been eliminated from contention. However, these two teams are certainly not playing like it lately.
The Rays lost yet another matchup to the Red Sox, getting shut out 6-0 on Tuesday. They’ve now lost four straight games and11 out of their last 15 overall.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have won back-to-back games and five out of their last eight. They’ve been the better of the two teams on the MLB betting odds.
If you bet online, is there any reason to bet against the trends right now? Let’s take a closer look.
Rays: Offense has Disappeared
It’s hard to find anything positive to say about the Tampa Bay Rays offense right now. They were shut out on Tuesday, marking the seventh time in eight losses that they’ve scored one run or less.
If there is a “bright spot” in some of this, it is the fact that Tuesday’s game was called after five innings due to rain. Still, the team managed just two hits in five innings of play.
Josh Fleming will be hitting the mound for the Rays on Wednesday and he’s 2-4 with a 6.23 ERA. If you’re examining this game for your MLB picks, how can you take the Rays knowing that the pitcher and their batting lineup are laboring right now?
Fleming has faced the Red Sox twice this season. The first one saw him go five innings and allow eight hits and four runs. The second saw him go just three innings and allow six hits and four runs.
Allowing eight runs in seven innings isn’t going to cut it for Tampa Bay.
Pivetta Gets Nod for Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox might be eliminated from playoff contention but they have been focused on finishing strong. Nick Pivetta is tasked with picking up the win on Wednesday and he’s 10-12 with a 4.56 ERA.
Pivetta has been a decent bet in the sportsbook of late as the Red Sox have won four of his last five starts. He’s also allowed more than three runs in four of those matchups, so it’s mostly been good run support that’s helped him out.
One thing to note is that in that five-game stretch, one was against the Rays. He pitched well in that game, though, going five innings and allowing just one run.

Rays vs Red Sox Prediction
With the direction that these two teams are going, it’s getting harder and harder to pick the Rays to win. They were just locked down by Boston in back-to-back nights and are starting a pitcher that doesn’t have a lot of success against the Red Sox.
In this final game of the regular season, the Red Sox certainly look like they are in a prime position to earn another win. Roll with them over the struggling Rays.
