Tampa Bay Tries To End Four-Game Slide
The Chicago White Sox go for a series sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays when the teams play the series finale of their weekend series on Sunday.
Chicago has won two straight and six of seven to climb to the top of the AL Central standings by two games over the second-place Cleveland Guardians.
Tampa Bay has dropped four in a row to fall below .500 and into fourth place in the AL East, a half-game behind the third-place Toronto Blue Jays. This matchup should be interesting and may be difficult to decide on how to bet online, but read our in-depth preview and we’ll try to guide you to a winning wager.
Little Things Costing Rays During Losing Streak
The Tampa Bay Rays jumped out to a 3-0 start to the 2022 campaign, but they’ve been struggling to get a win since. For Rays manager Kevin Cash, it’s just a matter of tightening a few things to get Tampa Bay back on the winning track.
“We’re 4-5 for a reason,” Cash said after Saturday’s loss. “A lot of it is because we haven’t been as crisp on defense, we’ve been running into outs. That is a little uncharacteristic for this club, but we’re going to work hard to get it right.”
The Rays looked like they might break the streak on Saturday, loading the bases in the top of the ninth, but they couldn’t get the tying run across, falling 3-2. Taylor Walls struck out after the Chicago White Sox intentionally walked pinch hitter Ji-Man Choi.
Choi has been a bright spot for Tampa Bay, hitting .526 with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs and five runs scored. Shortstop Wander Franco has also been doing well at the plate, hitting .378 with four doubles, a triple, four RBIs and six runs scored.
The Rays will go with a bullpen game on Sunday, with right-hander J.P. Feyereisen getting the start. Feyereisen has made four appearances this season, failing to record a decision while pitching 3⅓ innings and allowing no runs and just two hits.
White Sox Atop American League after Win Streak
The Chicago White Sox were expected to be good this season, and they’re coming through early on to show that they should be considered one of the favorites in the American League. Chicago has the top record in the AL after four straight wins, and they could increase their lead in the AL Central with a four-game series with the second-place Cleveland Guardians beginning on Monday.
It will help the team’s chances if first baseman Jose Abreu starts getting going at the plate. Abreu had his first home run of the season in Saturday’s win, but he’s hitting just .200 with two doubles, four RBIs and seven runs scored.
Shortstop Tim Anderson has gotten off to a fast start, batting .440 with three doubles, a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored. Outfielder Eloy Jiminez has a team-high seven RBIs despite batting just .250 with one extra-base hit.
Right-hander Vince Velasquez will make his second start. Velasquez was solid in his White Sox debut against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, going four innings and allowing one run on just two hits while striking out two and walking three.
Rays vs White Sox Head-to-Head
The Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays have been almost even over the last few seasons, with the teams splitting 24 games in the last four seasons they’ve faced each other entering 2022. The home team took two out of three in each of the teams’ two series last season.
The White Sox have not won a season series with the Rays since winning four of six in 2018. Despite the White Sox’s winning streak, the Rays are still being given respect in the MLB lines, which have this game at even odds.
