Red Sox to Rebound vs Yankees in MLB Odds for Sept 13
Rain postponed the opening game of four between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, leading to the teams playing a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Yankees won both in two low-scoring affairs, changing MLB betting lines for Wednesday’s matchup.

The Red Sox are now tied with the Yankees for last place in the AL East. They are in danger of finishing last in the division 3 out of 4 years now. That’s only happened once with this franchise over the last 90 seasons. pic.twitter.com/zPLQYn2KBb

Neither team in this historic rivalry is on pace to make the playoffs. Both are a game above .500 and seven back from a Wild Card spot.
Starting Pitchers
Clarke Schmidt (9-8, 4.54 ERA) vs Tanner Houck (4-9, 5.28)
Neither starting pitcher is the best option for either team, which will affect MLB bets for this matchup, especially after the recent bullpen usage.
Clarke Schmidt has gotten his first real run at being a starter for the Yankees this season. At the start, there were a lot of bumps in the road, but nearing the end of the season, Schmidt has rounded into form. He has a 3.47 ERA through his last four outings, with an opposing batting average of .233 in 23.1 innings, striking out 26. In his previous outing, Schmidt allowed three runs in 6.1 innings, striking out six.
For the Red Sox, they will have Tanner Houck taking the mound. He has struggled in his last two outings, allowing a combined nine runs in 10.1 innings. It was his third and fourth appearance since returning from the Injured List, having been out for over two months after being hit in the face with a ball, pitching against the Yankees.
Two Struggling Lineups
In this game, the poor starting pitching can lean MLB online betting toward the over, but given the opening two games of this series, that is hard to imagine. For both games in the doubleheader, the over/under was set at 9½ and will be again for Wednesday’s matchup.
Both games easily hit the under, with the Yankees winning 3-2 and 4-1. Three of the four starting pitchers had great outings despite struggling in previous appearances. On top of that, the bullpen dominated the game when called upon. The Yankees bullpen did not allow a run, pitching 9.1 innings, using eight pitchers. The Red Sox bullpen found similar success, pitching eight innings but allowing two runs in the second game, also using eight pitchers.
The pitching success in both games was surprising and does make things a little more complicated regarding MLB odds for this third game. Because, again, neither starting pitcher has performed great recently, which should lead to a high-scoring matchup. Plus, the bullpens should be tired after a doubleheader in which they were heavily used.
However, while the pitching was good in both games, much of the blame for the lack of scoring falls on the lineups. Neither the Yankees nor the Red Sox lineup had much success. The Yankees had 14 hits, striking out 29 times through both games. For the Red Sox, they managed 13 hits and struck out 21 times.
The Yankees especially have struggled offensively, with only 18 runs and a batting average of .150 through the last seven days.
Yankees vs Red Sox Best Bet
Given what happened yesterday, it feels like the under for this game might be the perfect bet. However, for MLB picks, it is tough to back two bad lineups and two struggling pitchers.
The better bet is to side with the Red Sox on the moneyline. Almost everything went right for the Yankees in the first two games, using most of their bullpen. That should leave very few options for the third game, and the Red Sox should be able to take advantage while at home.
