Orioles Need Wins
The Baltimore Orioles try to get hot at home when they host the Boston Red Sox in the first of a key three-game series on Friday night. Baltimore has gone 3-4 on its current homestand and needs to turn things around in a hurry as it trails the Toronto Blue Jays for the final Wild Card spot in the American League by 4½ games.
Boston has dropped three in a row and is 10 games off the pace for the final Wild Card spot. These teams are both fighting for their playoff lives, so this will be an intense series. To help you decide on your bet online, check out our in-depth preview of Friday’s contest.
Red Sox Falling Out of Contention
Time is running out for the Boston Red Sox, who have multiple teams to jump in the standings. Getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays – one of the playoff teams ahead of them – in a three-game series didn’t do the Red Sox any favors, so they must start putting together wins starting this weekend.
Right-hander Brayan Bello will be on the mound for Boston, making his seventh start and ninth overall appearance of his rookie campaign. Bello is 1-4 with a 5.91 ERA, striking out 29 in 32 innings. He picked up his first major league win in his last outing, going six shutout innings against the Texas Rangers on Saturday, allowing just three hits while striking out five and walking one.
Boston outhit Tampa Bay 6-4 in the series finale between the teams on Wednesday but couldn’t push across a run. Outfielder Tommy Pham was 2-for-4 at the plate and is hitting .274 with eight doubles, five home runs, 17 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 32 games since coming to the Red Sox in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.
Outfielder Alex Verdugo was 0-for-3 with a walk on Wednesday, ending his streak of three straight games with two hits. He’s batting .284 with 34 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 63 RBIs and 64 runs scored.
Time is Now for Orioles’ Playoff Push
There is little room for error for the Baltimore Orioles these days, with ground needing to be made up in a hurry and the schedule dwindling by the day. Baltimore dropped three of four against the team it is pursuing, the Toronto Blue Jays, making this weekend even more crucial to the team’s postseason chances.
“It’s going to take some wins. We need to win the series,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after Wednesday’s loss. “We won five series going into this series and we’ve got to bounce back and continue to play winning series.”
First baseman Ryan Mountcastle drove in the Orioles’ lone run in the series finale. Mountcastle is batting .246 with 26 doubles, 21 home runs, 77 RBIs and 56 runs scored.
Right-hander Austin Voth will make his 14th start and 37th appearance of 2022 on Friday. Voth is 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA, striking out 73 over 81⅔ innings. He’s allowed just four earned runs over his last four starts spanning 21 innings, striking out 14 and walking seven.
Red Sox vs Orioles Head-To-Head
The Baltimore Orioles have a 7-5 lead on the Boston Red Sox in the season series between the two division rivals. Baltimore is going for its first season series win against Boston since the 2017 campaign.
The Orioles are 4-2 at home against the Red Sox, but they haven’t won the majority of their home games against Boston since 2015. The MLB lines for Friday’s series opener are favoring the Orioles to come out on top.
