Boston Aiming for Seventh Straight Win
Among the issues for the Boston Red Sox in 2022, when they went 78-84, was an inability to do anything against the Toronto Blue Jays. They were just 3-16 against the Jays while getting outscored by a massive 125-55 margin.
That’s what makes this week’s four-game sweep of Toronto so notable. This seems, at least 33 games in, to be a much better Red Sox team, one that’s putting up big numbers on the offensive end. They chased Kevin Gausman early in Thursday’s 11-5 win, with both Masataka Yoshida and Rafael Devers going deep to push Boston’s win streak to six games.
“Great series, great homestand,” manager Alex Cora said of the 6-1 stay at Fenway Park. “We’re playing good baseball.”
Indeed they are. Boston ranks second only to the Tampa Bay Rays in terms of runs scored. It’s doing so after losing Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez in the offseason, Trevor Story to elbow surgery in spring training and Adam Duvall to a wrist fracture early in the season.
Also, Devers has actually been in a bit of a funk while the rest of the lineup buzzes around him. He was just 4-for-30 over an eight-game span prior to going 3-for-5 against Toronto on Thursday. If Devers gets going again, the sky’s the limit for this offense.
The starting pitching remains a sore spot for the Red Sox, however. A better Chris Sale would go a long way to fixing that, and he’s showing signs of a turnaround with two very good starts sandwiched around one clunker over his last three outings.

Phillies Limp Home from Tough Trip
The Harper return was all well and good, but it was one of the few bright spots in a six-game excursion that ended with four straight losses for the Philadelphia Phillies. The pitching failed them in a big way at Los Angeles, where they gave up 36 runs over the course of a three-game sweep at the hands of the Dodgers.
Harper was 3-for-3 with two walks and helped Philadelphia build a 5-1 lead on Wednesday. Los Angeles clawed back and won it on a walk-off grand slam by Max Muncy.
“That can’t happen,” Harper said. “We just gave that game away. That cannot happen. With the way we want to do it this year and the way we want to play this year, every year, that can’t happen. That’s a really good team over there, but a 5-1 game … we’ve got to do better. We’ve got to be better.”
Wednesday’s blow-up pushed the Phillies’ road ERA to an atrocious 6.33, second-worst in the majors ahead of only Oakland’s 9.16. Perhaps a return home, where it’s a tidy 3.51, will help.
Zack Wheeler will try to keep Boston’s offense down when he goes for his third straight win. He blanked Houston over six impressive frames his last time out, leading Philadelphia to its most recent victory.
Wheeler gives the Phillies the early edge but their bullpen has struggled. Boston’s has been solid, so if you’re into MLB live betting take the Sox to do some stuff later in the game.
