Yankees Look for Second Straight Over Rival Red Sox
Bitter Rivals Clash After Extra-Inning Opener
The New York Yankees look for a second straight win to open the 2022 season when they play host to the Boston Red Sox for the second of a three-game series on Saturday. New York took the series and season opener with an 11-inning victory on Friday, scoring single runs in each of the extra frames. Boston is looking to bounce back and avoid an 0-2 start. This one should be another close one, so before you make a bet online on this contest, check out our in-depth preview.
Let’s check the latest MLB Picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB Odds for Red Sox vs Yankees. We’ve plenty of MLB Predictions.

Red Sox Look for More Consistency at Plate
The Boston Red Sox have a potent lineup, and they scored five runs in the opener, but only two of those runs came after the first inning. Boston jumped on New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole, with the team’s first four batters reaching base and three runs scoring on a pair of extra-base hits.
Third baseman Rafael Devers got his campaign off to a solid start, hitting a two-run homer in his first at-bat while also walking once. Devers had a career-high 38 home runs last season, adding 113 RBIs and 101 runs scored, and he’s being counted on to power the Boston offense this season.
Shortstop Xander Bogaerts is also a key piece to the Red Sox’s offense, and he started with a 3-for-5 day with an RBI and two runs scored. Bogaerts left Friday’s opener with a right hamstring issue, but the hope is he’ll be ready to go for Saturday’s contest.
On the mound for Boston will be right-hander Nick Pivetta. The 29-year-old was 9-8 with a 4.53 ERA in his first full season with the Red Sox in 2021, striking out 175 and walking 65. He was 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in two starts against New York last season.
Yankees Ready To Get Off To Fast Start
One win to start the season is nice, but the New York Yankees want more than that, especially after they stumbled out of the gate last season, going 6-11 over the first three weeks. It certainly helps to get things going with a walk-off win in front of a packed home stadium.
“The energy in the stadium, the atmosphere was pretty electric,” Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson said after driving in the winning run in Friday’s win. “It doesn’t get any bigger than this right here.”
Donaldson was acquired in an offseason trade, and he was the team’s leadoff hitter for the opener, going 2-for-6. The 36-year-old batted .247 in 135 games with the Minnesota Twins last season, hitting 26 home runs and driving in 72 runs.
Three Yankees hit home runs in the opener, with Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu all reaching the Yankee Stadium seats. It was a lot of hit-or-miss in the opener for New York, with the team also striking out 15 times.
Right-hander Luis Severino will take the mound after pitching just in four regular-season games and one postseason contest in 2021. The two-time All-Star has pitched 27⅔ innings since 2019 due to undergoing Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2020.
Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Head-to-Head
The Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees in their season series in 2021, taking 11 of 20 contests. But it was like the tale of two seasons, as Boston won the first seven and nine of the first 11 before New York bounced back with seven of the final nine matchups.
The Yankees did hold the slight edge when playing at home, taking five of the nine games played in Yankee Stadium. New York playing at home and the potential of Severino pitching well has the Yankees getting the slight edge with the MLB lines.

Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Prediction
The New York Yankees have a stacked lineup, and Pivetta struggled against them last season. The Boston Red Sox might have trouble getting runs on the board if Severino can find his groove, but even if he doesn’t, New York should find a way to improve to 2-0 on Saturday.
When making your MLB picks, take New York to get the win at home.
