Red Sox vs Yankees Series Picks, Predictions 9/12
- With the postseason approaching, the Yankees are tweaking their pitching rotation to ensure everyone is fresh.
- The Red Sox have struggled early in September, which has moved them out of the Wild Card hunt for MLB playoff betting.
- The Yankee lineup should get some runs across as the Red Sox’s starting pitchers are in a slump.
Going into the final series between these historic rivals, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are trending in the opposite direction as the 2024 regular season winds down. That should affect MLB odds as the playoffs are just around the corner.
Going into this four-game series that begins on Thursday night, the Yankees are in a race to win the American League East while trying to make a World Series run. On the other side, a recent poor stretch for the Red Sox has pushed them away from a Wild Card spot, with very few games left.

Red Sox vs Yankees Series Betting Preview
Game 1: Weird Pitching Series For Yankees
With the Yankees keeping an eye on the postseason, they are starting to mess around with their starting rotation. Last week, they brought Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt off the injured list, which means the Yankees now have six starting pitchers on their roster. That led to Schmidt getting a start on Sept. 7 and Nestor Cortes piggybacking on him, both working over four innings.
Nestor Cortes was not pleased with being moved to the bullpen this turn through.
“Obviously, I was upset. I feel like amongst all the starters, I’ve been the workhorse here,” Cortes said. “Once [Gerrit] Cole went down, they picked me to be the Opening Day starter; not…

The Yankees could be going to a six-man rotation, trying to keep their starters fresh in the last month of the regular season. That should led to Cortes getting the start in the first game of this series. Bringing Cortes out of the bullpen in his last appearance was a decent choice as he went 4.1 scoreless innings. He allowed five runs in four innings in his previous start, so the threat of being axed from the rotation could likely spark him.
On the other hand, the Red Sox starter will be Cooper Criswell, who is coming off a difficult start. He only allowed two runs in five innings but battled, giving up six hits and walking two batters. That could lean MLB lines in favor of the Yankees, a team with one of the league’s highest on-base percentages.
Game 2: Red Sox Banking on Houck
The Red Sox will have their best-starting pitcher, Tanner Houck, on the mound in this game, which could lean MLB odds in their favor. However, Houck had his last start pushed back and is listed as day-to-day, but all reports show him starting for this game.
As of now, Tanner Houck is still in line to start Friday. When asked how exactly he hasn’t rebounded from his last start, Alex Cora said it’s basically a case of dead-arm.

Furthermore, Houck has struggled since the All-Star Break. Before the break, he had a 2.54 ERA over 19 starts. But in his nine appearances since the break, he has an ERA of 4.78. Since the break, the Red Sox have only won one of Houck’s starts.
However, the Yankees’ starting pitcher for this game should be Schmidt. Before starting on Sept. 7, he had not pitched since May 26 because of an injury. Before being replaced by Cortes, Schmidt pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Without a plan to limit Schmidt in this game, that could open the door for the Red Sox lineup to offer some run support for Houck.

Game 3: Will Ace Go for Yankees?
This is again another game that the Yankees are still trying to figure out their rotation, but Gerrit Cole could be in line to get the start. The reigning 2023 AL Cy Young winner has been dealing with injuries this season but seems to be finally finding his groove.
Since August, Cole has made seven starts and has just seven earned runs in 40 innings with a 1.58 ERA and 47 strikeouts. It will be hard for MLB betting not to back Cole when he is pitching like that.

It makes even more sense to back the Yankees when the Boston Red Sox have Brayan Bello on the mound with a 4.70 ERA. He has allowed six runs in 10.1 innings over his last two starts. New York’s lineup might not be the hottest it has been all season, but it still is led by Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, which should be good enough for a few runs.
Game 4: Good Spot for Boston Offense
Finally, the Red Sox will have Kutter Crawford on the mound in this four-game series finale. Crawford has had a solid season with a 4.09 ERA but has pitched well recently. In his last four starts, he has allowed two runs in each but has gotten a total of four runs in run support from the Red Sox lineup. That has led to four straight losses for him despite pitching well.
However, the New York Yankees should have Carlos Rodon on the mound for this game, which could equalize some things. While he has had a solid season, Rodon has struggled with the long ball in his last three starts, allowing at least one in each. If Crawford can get some run support, possibly against Rodon, this may make this series finale interesting.
Red Sox vs Yankees Predictions: Series Split 2-2
When it comes to four-game series, especially between rivals, it is always difficult to back one team in MLB Picks. That is true in this series between the Red Sox and Yankees. The Yankees should take three of these games because of their pitching advantage, but there is a chance the Red Sox will steal another game, especially in the finale.

Questions of the Day
Which of these teams will make the playoffs?
The Yankees have one of the best records in baseball and are leading the AL East, clearly on a path to a World Series run. If the playoffs started today, the Red Sox would miss the playoffs.
Who is a possible player prop bet for this series?
Aaron Judge is one of the best hitters in the league, and it is hard to see him not succeeding against these Red Sox pitchers.
