It Won’t Take Long for Baseball’s Most Intense Rivalry to Get Underway

Opener Postponed One Day

Yankees No. 2 Pick in AL East

It can be easy to forget that the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees aren’t the only teams in the American League East considering how much attention the series between the bitter rivals get. Add in the teams set to meet to kick off the season and the hype will be off the charts even if the MLB playoffs odds for the teams aren’t quite as lofty as in past years.

The pitching matchup in Friday’s opener should be a good one with Nathan Eovaldi of the Red Sox going against Gerrit Cole of the Yankees. Cole is the early leader at +400 to win the AL Cy Young Award according to the MLB picks. Eovaldi is well back at +2800.

Toronto (+175) is the favorite to win the division followed by the Yankees at +225. Tampa Bay follows at +250 while Boston is a distant fourth at +550.

Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for Red Sox vs Yankees. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.

Concerns about Red Sox Rotation

Chris Sale was limited to just nine starts a season ago so it’s difficult hearing that he is starting the season on the 60-day disabled list is hardly what Boston fans wanted to hear.

When healthy, he is as good of a starting pitcher as there is in the American League but staying healthy has been the issue. It is not like the rest of the starting rotation is bursting with potential aces.

Eovaldi gets the opening day start and his ERA of 3.55 is the best among the Red Sox starters during spring training. Eovaldi, Tanner Houck and Nick Pivetta are striking out a bunch of hitters during the spring but also allowing runners to reach. Michael Wacha was once thought to be one of the pitching stars of the future for the St. Louis Cardinals but he has won just 18 games over the last four seasons pitching for three different teams.

If the staff can hold things together until Sale comes back, there are familiar names led by MVP candidate Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Bobby Dalbec in the batting order.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone over in eight of Boston’s last nine games and in four of the last six contests on the road.

Changes in the Yankees’ Batting Order

The best thing about the New York Yankees heading into the season is what catcher Kyle Higashioka is doing. He has seven homers and a .423 batting average in the spring and he will be the No. 1 guy following the trade of Gary Sanchez to the Minnesota Twins. If he can carry over that momentum into the season, maybe the Yankees will have something.

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton could be one of the top power duos in baseball if they both stay healthy.

Sanchez, Gio Urshela, Brett Gardner and Luke Voit are among the players gone from last year’s Yankees lineup. Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Marwin Gonzalez are among the new arrivals.

The Yankees will hit plenty of homers but will the lineup be able to score in other ways?

The MLB betting lines total have gone under in four of the Yankees’ last six games at home.

Red Sox vs Yankees Head-to-Head

The New York Yankees won six games in a row outscoring Boston 31-14 but the Red Sox got revenge with a 6-2 win in the postseason to eliminate the Yankees.

Each of the last seven games between the rivals has been decided by at least two runs with the road team winning three of the last four.

Something to consider for those who bet online, eight of the last 11 contests between the Red Sox and Yankees have gone under the total.

Red Sox vs Yankees Prediction

It is hard to pick against Cole in this one especially with him pitching at home in the 2022 season opener for the Yankees.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Rafael Devers of the Red Sox rank fourth and fifth in the AL MVP race going into the season but the success of the respective teams will be determined by how some of the unsung players in the batting lineups for both teams produce.

Pick: Yankees -170

Pick: Red Sox +1½ (-140)
