Reds Showing Fight Against Division Rival

The Cincinnati Reds have had their moments against the St. Louis Cardinals this season, and they’d like to have a few more this weekend. Cincinnati isn’t in contention for the postseason, but putting some losses on one of its more bitter rivals would certainly lift the team’s spirits.

Cincinnati has been dealing with multiple injuries to its starting rotation in recent weeks. Having a pair of games on Saturday to plan for, the Reds will with a bullpen game on Friday night. Right-hander Fernando Cruz will serve as the opener. He has not thrown more than 23 pitches in any of his six appearances this season.

Outfielder Aristides Aquino was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run on Thursday, with his round-tripper being the eventual winning run. Aquino is batting just .211 with 11 doubles, nine home runs, 28 RBIs and 22 runs scored in 67 games.

Outfielder TJ Friedl was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk in the series opener. Friedl is batting .258 with eight doubles, five triples, six home runs, 22 RBIs and 29 runs in 56 games in 2022.

Offense Becoming Problem for Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have some of the game’s best hitters in their lineup, including first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and third baseman Nolan Arenado, but lately, they’ve been struggling to score runs. St. Louis had just two in Thursday’s loss, but manager Oliver Marmol isn’t too concerned.

We’ll put it together,” Marmol said after Thursday’s loss. “It’s been a stretch where there are no offense certain days. We just came up short tonight. We ran out of time there. We’re not overly concerned.”

The Cardinals tried to make a late rally, loading the bases in the ninth inning and scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by Albert Pujols. But that was all they could muster, losing for the second time in three games.

Right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his sixth start of the season on Friday night as he tries to work his way back from shoulder injuries that have limited him in 2022. Flaherty is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA, striking out 12 in 18 innings. He struggled in his last start on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, going five innings and allowing three runs on six hits, including two home runs, while striking out none and walking four.

Reds vs Cardinals Head-To-Head

The Cincinnati Reds kept alive their hopes for winning a second straight season series from the St. Louis Cardinals with Thursday’s win. Cincinnati would have to sweep the final four games of this series to accomplish the feat, which would give it a second straight 10-9 advantage over St. Louis.

The Cardinals are 4-2 at home against Cincinnati and haven’t had a losing record at home against the Reds since 2006. Looking at the MLB lines for Friday’s contest, the Cardinals are the favorite to even this series up and clinch the season series with a victory.
