Picks, Prediction for Reds vs Red Sox on Thursday, June 1

The longest winning streak in baseball belongs to the Cincinnati Reds, who will try for their second straight sweep on the road when they finish a three-game series at Boston on Thursday. The Reds have taken each of the first two by one run apiece, rallying from an early deficit to steal a 5-4 win on Wednesday.

Cincinnati hasn’t had a six-game winning streak in about two years. Its effort for another will fall on hard-throwing righty Hunter Greene, who opposes Boston’s Chris Sale in an intriguing finale. After reading this preview, check out our MLB lines.

Steer Guides Reds

Spencer Steer is among the many young Reds who are hot at the plate. His two-run homer Wednesday snapped a seventh-inning tie and gave the 25-year-old three dingers during a 15-game stretch in which he’s hitting .391. Rookie infielder Matt McLain had his fourth multi-hit game of the win streak and is batting .361 in 14 games. It might be prudent to stick with Cincinnati’s hot bats at the sportsbook.

Red Sox in Need of Jolt

Boston was above .500 all of May but would fall back to the even mark with a loss in the finale. Its AL-leading 35th error played a hand in Cincinnati’s decisive rally and it left the bases loaded to end its half of the seventh. Boston is batting .286 with 21 extra-base hits over the last five games, so a breakout is coming. Consider that with your MLB picks.

Starting Pitchers

Hunter Greene (1-4, 4.18 ERA) vs. Chris Sale (5-2, 4.72)

Greene finally picked up his first win with six hitless innings at Wrigley Field on Friday. He struck out 11 – tying a career-high – in the gem, which lowered his road ERA to 3.41. You might want to take that into account when making your bet online, but know that Greene’s only prior Fenway Park start last year was a rough one. He gave up four runs on six hits in 3⅔ innings, with all the damage coming in the fourth inning.Ever since a blowup in Baltimore on April 24, Sale has been in a groove. He’s 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA in five starts, striking out 35 while walking four. The seven-time All-Star has allowed exactly one run in each of his last three home starts, including an eight-inning masterpiece against St. Louis in his last outing there. The Reds are the only team he has never faced.

Reds vs Red Sox Head-to Head

Cincinnati has won three of the last four meetings in Boston after dropping its first five at Fenway Park. Nine of the last 13 matchups have been decided by one run.

Reds vs Red Sox Betting Lines

Over/Under Pick

This is the best pitching matchup of the series, and it could be a nail-biter. However, Cincinnati ranks seventh in the majors with a .278 average against lefties, while Boston is fourth against righties (.265), so there could be some traffic on the bases. Also, the bullpens have been used up over the first two games. Check the MLB odds and think about taking another over.

Pick: Over 9 (-120)

Moneyline Pick

We said yesterday that the Reds’ streak is something you might have to ride until it ends, and that paid off. But we think the Sox will go in with a tinge of desperation as they try to break out of this funk. If not, there’s no better story on the MLB news pages.

Take Boston to break the streak behind another solid outing from Sale and a few late runs. Those doing live betting should also take the Red Sox in the late innings.

Pick: Boston Red Sox -155
