San Francisco on Two-Game Winning Streak
The San Francisco Giants go for a third straight victory and a spot alone in third place in the NL West standings when they host the Colorado Rockies in the first of a key, three-game series between division rivals on Monday night.
San Francisco took the final two games of its home series with the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, moving into a tie with the Rockies for third in the division, 2½ games behind the second-place San Diego Padres. Colorado dropped two of three to the host Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend, with Arizona just 1 ½ games behind both teams in the NL West. This will be a hotly-contested series, so make sure you read our in-depth preview of the opener before you make any bet online on this one.
Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for Rockies vs Giants. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.
Rockies Hoping to Be Better On Road
The Colorado Rockies often have a solid home-field advantage playing at Coors Field, but their best years are when they are just as effective on the road. After dropping two of three to the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend, Colorado is just 5-7 as the visiting team in 2022, compared to its 11-5 record at home.
Trying to get the team off to a good start in this series will be Austin Gomber, who will take the mound for his sixth start of the season. The left-hander is 2-2 with a 3.58 ERA this season, striking out 26 over 27⅔ innings of work. He picked up the win in his last outing, facing the Washington Nationals at home on Wednesday, going 6⅔ innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one.
First baseman C.J. Cron has been the main man at the plate for the Rockies, leading the team in batting average (.311), home runs (nine), and RBIs (24). He’s tied for the major league lead in home runs and tied for third in baseball in RBIs.
Outfielder Randal Grichuk has been solid at the plate in his first season with Colorado. The 30-year-old is batting .294 with three doubles, four home runs, 16 RBIs, and 12 runs scored.
Giants Finding Some Offense that Leads to Wins
After struggling offensively during a five-game losing streak, the San Francisco Giants have come alive over the last two games, scoring 17 runs in two victories. Sunday saw LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski each hit a home run to power the team, though manager Gabe Kapler was happy with everyone in the team’s lineup.
“The at-bat quality was excellent up and down the lineup,” Kapler said after Sunday’s win. “Obviously Yaz and LaMonte Wade had the big hits, but there’s plenty of grindy at-bats around them supporting them. It sort of seems like the last couple of days we’ve been more like ourselves from a brand perspective. That feels good.”
Yastrzemski had been out for seven games on the COVID-19 injured list before coming back last week, and he’s been heating up. Since returning to the lineup five games ago, he’s batting .375 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Second baseman Wilmer Flores has also been very good, leading the team with a .271 batting average and 19 RBIs. Flores had a grand slam and six RBIs in Saturday’s victory, and he has six doubles, three home runs and 14 runs scored this season.
Left-hander Carlos Rodon will make his sixth start of the season as he looks to rebound from his first loss with San Francisco. Rodon is 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA (fifth in baseball) with 41 strikeouts in 29 innings of work. Rodon took the loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday in his last start, allowing two runs on three hits over six innings.
Rockies vs Giants Head-to-Head
The San Francisco Giants dominated the season series between these division rivals in 2021, winning 15 of the 19 matchups. The Colorado Rockies won just two games at each venue, going 2-7 at home and 2-8 at Oracle Park.
San Francisco has won or tied the season series in games played in the Bay Area in every season since 2015. The MLB lines are counting on that trend continuing, as the Giants are a big favorite in the series opener.
