Royals Tamed by Tigers

After winning five-of-six games against the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners, the Kansas City Royals just didn’t have it against the Detroit Tigers, getting swept in a three-game set. Two of those games were one-run decisions, including a 10-inning loss in the opener.

Righthander Brady Singer tries to get the Royals back to their winning ways in his 24th start (27th appearance) Friday night. Singer is a solid 10-4 with a 2.99 ERA, 144 strikeouts in 147.2 innings. He’s been red-hot this month, 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA in four September starts. Singer is coming off a seven-inning stint against the Mariners last Friday (one run, five hits, eight strikeouts, two walks).

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. continues to make his case for American League Rookie of the Year, entering this elongated series on an 11-game hitting streak. The 22-year-old is batting .256 with 31 doubles, six triples, 20 home runs, 80 RBIs and 81 runs scored.

Guardians Close the Sale

The Cleveland Guardians have been one of the tougher teams to put away late in games this season. That was the case again Thursday, rallying to earn a 2-1 victory against a Tampa Bay Rays’ team needing that win to clinch a playoff spot. Cleveland scored a pair of runs in the eighth to spoil the Rays’ party in what could be a postseason preview.

“Kind of been our M.O. all year long,” pitcher Cal Quantrill said after Thursday’s win. “You can’t put us away. I don’t think we’re a very fun team to face.”

Rookie outfielder Steven Kwan drove in one of the runs with a double. Kwan is batting .302 (12th in baseball), 9-of-18 over his last four. He has 23 doubles, seven triples, six homers, 51 RBIs and 87 runs scored.

Righty Aaron Civale will get the start for the Guardians Friday night. Civale is 3-6 with a 5.19 ERA in 18 starts this season, striking out 84 over 85 innings. He was the winner in his last outing (against the Texas Rangers last Sunday), having surrendered two runs (three hits) over five innings. He struck out seven with no walks.
