Greinke Gets Nod for Royals

In the series opener, the Kansas City Royals got an outstanding performance from starter Daniel Lynch, who threw six shutout innings to lead the team to a 6-0 victory. Lynch had thrown five scoreless frames in his previous start after allowing six runs in five innings in his first outing of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“It’s just amazing from a year ago where he is right now,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said of Lynch after Tuesday’s win. “How his demeanor, his rhythm, his repeatability, that’s really a thing that you see the most is he is repeating mechanics that are letting him repeat inside the zone and outside. He had everything today.”

Looking to follow that performance on the mound will be veteran right-hander Zack Greinke, who is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts season. Greinke was solid in his last outing against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. He allowed one run on six hits over five innings but took the loss in a 1-0 setback.

First baseman Carlos Santana is batting just .114, but he might be starting to heat up. Santana has a hit in each of the last three games, and he drove in two runs and scored once in Tuesday’s win. Santana has a double, a home run, five RBIs and five runs scored.

Outfielder Andrew Benintendi continues to shine at the plate, ranking second in baseball with a .389 batting average. Benintendi is on an eight-game hitting streak and has an RBI in each of the last three contests.

White Sox Scraping for Answers

The Chicago White Sox have had the bottom drop out on them, going from 6-2 to 6-10 in just over a week. Offense has been a problem for Chicago, which has scored two or fewer runs in five of its eight straight losses and ranks 28th in baseball in scoring with 50 runs, — one better than the Royals.

Designated hitter Andrew Vaughn leads the team with three home runs and eight RBIs. Vaughn is batting .279 and also has two doubles and four runs scored.

First baseman Jose Abreu is batting just .218, striking out a team-high 13 times. Abreu has three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and nine runs scored.

Right-hander Dylan Cease will get the start for Wednesday’s game, bringing a 2-1 record and 3.38 ERA to the mound. Cease has 19 strikeouts over 16 innings spanning three starts. He got roughed up a bit against the Cleveland Guardians in his last outing, going 5⅓ innings and allowing four runs on eight hits, including a home run, while striking out three and walking two.
