Tigers, Mariners Continue Series

Flexen Opposes Mize in Game Two

The second of the three-game series between the Detroit Tigers and visiting Seattle Mariners will occur on Wednesday night. The first pitch from Comerica Park is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Chris Flexen will throw for Seattle against Casey Mize.

This pitching matchup makes this game worthwhile as a bettor and fan. Flexen and Mize are two of the best young wings in the game. The Tigers are favored on the run line with a -133 moneyline. Seattle is a slight underdog to win at +123, and the over/under has been set at nine.

Game One Recap

In game one, Detroit got out to a quick three-run lead in the first inning of Tuesday’s contest. The Mariners answered in the top of the second inning with one run, but the Tigers matched it in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tigers scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, and at that point a four-run lead looked insurmountable for Seattle, one of the worst offenses in baseball.

The Mariners got two back in the top of the eighth, but they could not complete the comeback. The game ended with the Tigers besting Seattle 5-3.

Matt Boyd was sensational for Detroit. He pitched six innings and did not allow an earned run. If Mize commands his spots like Boyd on Tuesday, the Tigers will win the series.

Pitching Matchup

Neither Flexen nor Mize’s stats jump off the paper, but they are challenging to hit when they are on their game. Flexen is 5-3 for Seattle. He has gotten banged around when he misses his spots because of limited strikeout ability, but he has given his team a chance to win consistently.

Ever since Mize officially made Detroit’s rotation, the league has been buzzing. Mize earned some innings in 2020, but he was not ready for the show. However, he has arrived and he will headline the Detroit roster for years to come.

Mize is 3-4, but do not be fooled by his record. Detroit does not have a potent offense, so he has not earned a lot of run support. The pitcher has a 3.34 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 64.2 innings. This game will attract spectators because of the pitchers and it should be a fantastic show.

Who Wins?

The Tigers and Mariners have comparable offenses. Detroit is averaging .226 as a team compared to Seattle, who just managed to cross the Mendoza Line (.208). Seattle has been on the receiving end of no-hitter twice this season, so do not count on this team to deliver.

The one area where the Mariners have the advantage is in the power category. The team has blasted eight more homers than the Tigers. Nevertheless, Seattle has not been able to win with the long ball consistently.

In this game, it’s critical to look at the pitching, and the Tigers have a slight advantage. I think Mize will own the Mariners lineup as long as he sets the tone. He will have to get J.P. Crawford and Mitch Haniger out, which is the key to beating the Mariners.

The Tigers on the run line is a risky pick, but it has a great return. BETUS set odds for Detroit at -1½ runs at +150 and I believe they can cover.

Pick: Detroit Tigers -1½ runs (+150)
