Mariners Look for Another Win vs Angels

Mariners vs Angels Game series

The Seattle Mariners try for a second straight win when they take on the Los Angeles Angels in the second of a four-game series between division rivals on Friday night. First pitch is set for 9:38 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium.

Seattle won the series opener on Thursday night, 6-2, snapping a two-game losing streak. The Mariners improved to 29-29 and are in third place in the AL West, three games behind the second-place Houston Astros and three games ahead of the fourth-place Angels.

The Angels have alternated wins and losses in their last four games to fall to 25-31. The Angels are in fourth in the AL West, three games behind Seattle and four games ahead of the fifth-place Texas Rangers.

The MLB odds have the Angels with a moneyline of -175, while the Mariners are at +155. The over/under has been set at nine runs.

Group Effort

The Mariners will go with a bullpen game, with right-hander Robert Dugger getting the start. Dugger has made nine appearances, two starts, and has an 0-1 record with a 6.23 ERA.

Dugger has faced the Angels once, coming in for three innings in relief on May 1 and allowing two runs on two hits, including a home run. His last start was May 26 against Oakland, as he went 3⅓ innings — his longest stint of the season — and allowed five runs on five hits, including a home run.

Outfielder Jake Fraley had his first major league home run in Thursday’s win, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Fraley was on the injured list with a hamstring strain for 49 games but has gone 3-for-10 since coming back on May 31.

“He has created some length in his swing. I am happy to see he got that first home run out of the way,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said after Thursday’s win. “He is not in a hurry or jumpy at the plate. He is just staying in the moment.”

Third baseman Kyle Seager also had a home run, giving him 11 and 34 RBI this season. Outfielder Mitch Haniger leads the Mariners with 14 home runs and 37 RBI, hitting .267 and scoring a team-best 37 runs.

Side Gig

Shohei Ohtani will be on the mound for the Angels. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.72 ERA, striking out 50 and walking 26 in 36⅓ innings.

Ohtani took his first loss in his last start, against Oakland on May 28. He went six innings and allowed three runs on three hits, striking out five and walking four.

Ohtani is fifth with his 15 home runs and tied for eighth with 40 RBI. He doesn’t have a hit since Saturday, though he’s only appeared in three games in that span, including a pinch-hitting appearance in which he drew a walk.

First baseman Jared Walsh is batting .299 to rank 16th in the majors, and his 13 home runs are tied for 13th. He also has 39 RBI, which is tied for 11th. Walsh had a solo home run on Thursday night, his second in four games.

Angels Get Win

Los Angeles has been up and down this season, though missing Mike Trout for a couple of months has something to do with that. The Angels should be able to get some runs off the Mariners’ string of bullpen arms.

Ohtani is due for a big game on the mound and at the plate. We expect at least one of those to lead to a victory for the Angels.

When doing your MLB betting, take Los Angeles to win at home.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels -175
