St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago White Sox: Great Starters but a Stab at the Over

After being beaten Monday by the Chicago White Sox, the St. Louis Cardinals will enter Guaranteed Rate Field to make amends. However, facing one of the MLB’s best on their home field Tuesday may be a tough ask for the Cardinals. Let’s look at the matchup and see where the run total will finish in the MLB betting odds.

Betting Lines

Team Total Odds
St. Louis Cardinals Over 8 Even
Chicago White Sox Under 8 -120

Cardinals’ Pitching

The Cardinals will send their ace, Jack Flaherty, to the mound. Flaherty’s record of 8-0 the last nine games makes him the best candidate to get the job done. He comes into the game with a 2.53 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts. Flaherty is the best guy to stop this mini-skid. Flaherty is a strong candidate for the Cy Young, and a dominant performance against this White Sox offense would be another feather in his capt.

White Sox’ Offense

Chicago lost its way against the Yankees over the weekend, being swept in a three-game series. The White Sox were awful in all departments, especially in the second game when they lost 7-0. However, after a horrendous series, they got back to winning ways when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals at Guaranteed Rate Stadium.

One thing that stands out is their hitting. Even in the series finale against the Yankees, they scored four runs but couldn’t maintain a lead. So, the White Sox’ think tank will be hoping that their top hitter, Yermin Mercedes, can get things going. The Chicago catcher is batting .353, with 6 homers and 26 RBI. Alongside reigning AL MVP Jose Abreu, who leads the team with nine home runs and 35 RBIs, the White Sox have a loaded lineup and can do damage, even against the top pitchers like Flaherty.

White Sox Pitching

Chicago has selected Flaherty’s high school teammate, Lucas Giolito, to start proceedings against the Cardinals. He comes in with a 4.35 ERA, 61 strikeouts, and a 3-4 record. This is certainly a down year for Giolito compared to his breakout 2020 season, but he still has nasty stuff.

Cardinals’ Offense

Few of their batters have been performing exceptionally well, such as Edmundo Sosa. Over the last seven games Sosa is batting .550 with a team-best 15 total bases, an undervalued player with some of the big names the Cardinals have in their lineup. One of those players is Nolan Arenado, who has been solid in his first year in St. Louis. He leads the team with a .284 average, 10 home runs, and 32 RBIs. The pitching might be tough, but this is a good lineup.

Weather

The temperature at the start is expected to be 73 degrees.

Line Moves

The Line started at 8½ and has moved to a flat eight. This is mainly due to the pitching matchup. Flaherty and Giolito are two of the most dominant pitchers when they are right, and even with the good lineups both teams yield, these starters are scaring away bettors from taking the over.

Pick

Eight runs do not seem like a lot, but with these starters, scoring one run would be an accomplishment. We understand the reasoning for the low run total, but the value in betting the over is too good not to pass up. The White Sox offense has been clicking, and the Cardinals have the power to muscle a few out themselves. In the MLB sportsbook, we are going with over eight runs scored in this Interleague battle.

Pick: Over 8 Runs (Even)
