Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners: These Teams Won’t Score 9 Runs

A weekend series between AL West rivals continues on Saturday night, as the Texas Rangers take on the host Seattle Mariners. Seattle has won the first two games, including a 3-2 victory on Friday night. Texas is trying to snap a four-game losing streak and climb out of the division basement, while Seattle is trying to climb closer to the leaders in the standings. Let’s take a look at the MLB odds for this contest and come up with a total runs pick to make.

Betting Lines

Team Total Odds
Texas Rangers Over 8½ -115
Seattle Mariners Under 8½ -105

Rangers’ Pitching

Right-hander Mike Foltynewicz will take the mound for the Rangers, making his 10th start and second against the Mariners. Foltynewicz is 1-4 with a 4.53 ERA in 2021, striking out 42 and walking 15 in 55⅔ innings of work. In his previous start against Seattle, he took a no-decision, going 6⅔ innings and allowing four runs on six hits, including a pair of home runs, in a 5-4 Mariners win. His last start was much better, as he held the Astros scoreless over seven innings on just three hits.

Mariners’ Offense

The Mariners are last in the majors in team batting average at .203 and 23rd in runs scored with 195. Seattle has won four of its last five, averaging 3.8 runs. Outfielder Kyle Lewis has been the hot bat of late, going 5-of-18 with a double, two home runs, and four RBI over that five-game span. Outfielder Mitch Haniger leads Seattle with a .262 batting average, 13 home runs, and 34 RBI, though it’s been a week since he hit a home run.

Mariners’ Pitching

The Mariners will start right-hander Justin Dunn in this one, with the 25-year-old looking to improve on his 1-2 record and 3.40 ERA. Dunn has made eight starts, striking out 37 and walking 25 in 39⅔ innings. Dunn had a solid outing in his last start, holding San Diego to one run on one hit, a solo home run, over five innings last Sunday. Dunn has given up five home runs this season, though never more than one in a game.

Rangers’ Offense

Texas has really struggled to put runs on the board in this series, managing just two over the first two games, with both coming in Friday’s loss. The Rangers are missing out on opportunities to score and putting themselves in a hole before getting any runs on the board. Outfielder Adolis Garcia is tied for the major league-lead in home runs with 16 and is tied for third in baseball with 41 RBI, but he is just 1-for-7 with three strikeouts in this series.

Weather

The weather should be pleasant enough to have the roof open at T-Mobile Park, with temperatures expected to be in the high 60s and no rain in the forecast.

Line Moves

There has been no change in the line since it opened at 8½ runs.

Pick

Although neither of these pitchers has been consistently strong this season, these two teams have been struggling to score in this series. It’s hard to see a lot of runs going on the board in this one either. The safe bet in this one is to assume that trend continues for the third straight game. When doing your MLB betting, take the under.

Pick: Under 8½ Runs (-105)
