Suddenly Surging Pittsburgh Awaits Visit From Detroit

Tigers on Three-Game Slide

The Pittsburgh Pirates go for a third straight win when they host the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a two-game series on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh took the final two games of its weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks and sits in third place in the National League Central.

Detroit was swept by the New York Yankees in a three-game weekend set and is in fourth place in the American League Central standings. Both teams are fighting to get some consistency in the win column, so this should be a good game. Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports and MLB odds for Tigers vs Pirates. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.

Tigers Struggle in Series Sweep

The Detroit Tigers lost their third straight game on Sunday, but they could at least say they scored. Detroit dropped the first two contests of its weekend series against the New York Yankees by a combined score of 16-0, so a 5-4 setback in 10 innings on Sunday seemed a little more palatable.

Detroit is 28th in baseball with a team batting average of .218, and its 150 runs scored is the worst in the majors by more than 30 runs.

Shortstop Javier Baez was 2-for-4 with two RBIS and a run scored in Sunday’s loss, but he’s mainly been a disappointment in his first season with the Tigers. Baez is batting just .198 with nine doubles, three home runs, 15 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera has been a nice story as he leads the Tigers in batting average (.301) and RBIs (19). The 39-year-old was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored on Sunday, and he has six doubles, three home runs and 14 runs scored.

Left-hander Tarik Skubal will get the start in Tuesday’s contest for Detroit. Skubal is 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA (seventh in baseball), striking out 61 in 58.2 innings over 10 starts. He’s coming off an outstanding performance against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, throwing seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits while striking out six and walking one.

Youth Has Pirates Thinking About Contending

The Pittsburgh Pirates had quite a week, sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game series on the road before coming home and taking two out of three from the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend. The team is contending while playing some of its younger players, who are coming through in a big way.

“Any time we get our kids in the lineup and they start to play, you start to see the glimpses of putting the whole thing together,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after Sunday’s win. “There has been a process to it. I understand that maybe at times that process is frustrating to people, but (general manager Ben Cherington) has had a plan all along.”

One of those young players, Jack Suwinski, had quite a weekend by hitting a game-winning home run on Saturday before contributing three hits in Sunday’s victory. The rookie was 7-for-12 in the series against the Diamondbacks to raise his batting average to .229 in 34 games. He also has five doubles, six home runs, 14 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Outfielder Cal Mitchell had his first major league home run in Sunday’s win. The 23-year-old is batting .222 through his first 10 games in the majors, adding three doubles, three RBis and two runs scored.

Pittsburgh will send left-hander Jose Quintana to the mound for his 11th start on Tuesday night. Quintana is 1-2 with a 2.32 ERA, striking out 41 over 50.1 innings. He took a no-decision after going 4.1 innings against the Dodgers in his last start on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one.

Tigers at Pittsburgh Pirates Head-to-Head

These two teams split their first two games in early May in a doubleheader in Detroit. The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking for their second straight season series victory over the Detroit Tigers after taking four of the six matchups in 2021.

The Tigers dominated in 2020, winning all three matchups in a series that was played at PNC Park. The MLB lines for the series opener have the visitors having that same kind of success again, with Detroit getting the edge.

Tigers vs Pirates Prediction

The young bats of the Pittsburgh Pirates have been heating up, but they’re facing a hot pitcher in Skobal in Tuesday’s series opener. The question will be if the Detroit Tigers can get their offense going against the veteran Quintana. We see it happening, with the Tigers getting the victory in the opener.
