Best MLB Player Props Today

White Sox SP Garrett Crochet Over 7½ Strikeouts

I’m confident in our first MLB bet tonight, a strikeout prop. I’ve been fading the Red Sox all season, a strategy that has paid off. The Chicago White Sox will send 24-year-old righty Garrett Crochet to the mound against the Boston Red Sox in the second game of a four-game set at home. The tall lefty, in his fourth MLB season, has been one of the few bright spots for a struggling White Sox club in 2024. He appears to be an AL Cy Young candidate in his first season as a starter. Chicago used him as a reliever in his first few seasons, but since the move to the rotation, he appears to be a top-end rotation arm, and the White Sox desperately need him to be just that.

Crochet has a 106 Stuff+ this season, which is 19th in MLB among qualified pitchers and right behind Chris Sale. The southpaw’s slider and fastball combination has been baffling hitters. He is in the 85th percentile in WHIFF% and the 95th percentile in K%. He has struck out at least eight in three of his previous five starts this season. He’s been phenomenal and is currently in the 98th percentile in xERA (2.19); his actual ERA is 3.49, and xBA (.185), and his actual OBA is (.194)!

Boston’s lineup is inferior outside of Rafael Devers. The Red Sox have the fourth-highest K% and fifth-highest WHIFF% in MLB. Boston has the third-most strikeouts in MLB, behind only the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. Earlier this week, Boston was struck out 13 times by another left-hander, Max Fried. I expect this to be a popular play among MLB bettors tonight, but I can’t fade Crochet! Bank on the lefty to fan at least eight Red Sox batters tonight.

Rays SP Aaron Civale Over 2½ Earned Runs

I was searching high and low for the best way to back Baltimore tonight, and I settled here. The Tampa Bay Rays begin a three-game series at Tropicana Field against the Orioles. Tampa Bay will send 28-year-old Aaron Civale to the rubber. Civale will make his 13th start of the season, and it will be a back-to-back start against the O’s. I typically favor the offense in this situation. He went 5.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, and just 1 run in his previous start against Baltimore. I expect the O’s to produce the second time around against him.

The righty began his career as a promising arm with Cleveland, but injuries and a trade to Tampa Bay have thrown his trajectory off. In his second season with the Rays after he was traded last summer, he has a 5.37 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP through his first 12 outings in 2024.

He made one start against Baltimore last season, throwing five innings and allowing four hits and three earned runs. Since being traded to Tampa Bay, he has given up at least three earned runs in 12 of 22 starts (54%). Civale has allowed three earned runs in 6 of 12 starts this season, including six of his last nine. Betting against a Rays pitcher can be tricky sometimes because manager Kevin Cash never hesitates to go to his bullpen. Civale did not pitch beyond the 5th inning in May. Therefore, we’ll need the Baltimore bats to jump on him early.

The Orioles have scored the fourth-most runs (311) and have the third-highest OPS (.753) behind only the Yankees (.776) and the Dodgers (.770). Civale has four career starts against the O’s, allowing 1, 3, 5, and 4 earned. Bank on Baltimore!

Braves SP Chris Sale Over 6½ Strikeouts

I expect many bettors to be off the Sale train after his abysmal outing against Oakland. However, I’m going right back to him tonight in his start against the Washington Nationals and we’re getting a great price. Chris Sale has been a revelation for the Atlanta Braves through his first 11 starts. He has finished with at least 7 strikeouts in 8 outings (72% of starts). Sale has a 3.06 ERA but an xERA of 2.72 and a 0.95 WHIP. He is in the 98th percentile in Chase % and 88th percentile in K%!

He doesn’t have much experience pitching against the Nats, but Washington’s lineup has struggled against southpaws. Over the last month, Washington is 28th in wRC+ and 22nd in OBP against lefties. They have the sixth-highest K % against southpaws over this span. The 35-year-old is finally healthy again and could be the difference maker for the Braves rotation this season. I expect Sale to shove tonight and have a strong bounce-back showing.

Blue Jays SP Chris Bassitt Over 5½ Strikeouts

Would you look at that? Another K prop! Death, taxes, and firing up the starting pitcher against the Oakland Athletics. Veteran Chris Bassitt will make his 13th start of the year tonight, and it will be against his former club. The 35-year-old right-hander has finished with 7 strikeouts in consecutive outings. Bassitt spent six seasons with Oakland and has pitched exceptionally well in his two starts at Oakland since leaving in 2022.

Last Septemeber, he pitched 8 innings, allowed 1 run, and finished with 7 strikeouts in Oakland. We have seen 17 of the previous 20 starting pitchers against Oakland exceed this line (85%)!

The A’s had the third-most strikeouts in MLB over the previous two weeks. Oakland has the second-highest K% and the highest WHIFF% in MLB. The Athletics have the second-most strikeouts in MLB, behind only the Seattle Mariners. I’m firing up Bassitt against his former team and expect him to climb to at least six strikeouts.
