Twins, Guardians in Showdown
This series between the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Guardians is vitally important for both teams, who are separated by only two games in the American League Central. The Guardians find themselves trailing after getting swept over the weekend, but need to get back on track quickly and not allow the Twins to jump out to what could be a five-game lead by the end of this series.
Twins Seeking Redemption
The Minnesota Twins will be looking for redemption against the Guardians in this series. Last week, the Guardians managed to take two of three games from the Twins, tightening the AL Central race. The Twins had a better weekend series, taking two of three from the Colorado Rockies to reclaim first place.
Minnesota’s offense has really stepped up as of late to help balance out the pitching staff and put the Twins in a good position in the standings. The pitching staff has really been plagued by injuries, but what still remains has really worked hard to salvage what they can and keep games winnable. But it appears that the Twins will need to continue scoring runs at a high rate to get them to the playoffs.
Sonny Gray will be the mound for the Twins, sporting a 3-1 record with a 2.53 ERA. He can be magical when his stuff is on, but he has always struggled with consistency for longer periods of time, which has kept him from reaching his star potential.
Guardians Need Quick Recovery
After being swept by the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, the Cleveland Guardians find themselves in a two-game hole in the division. Now, welcoming in the Twins into town for a three-game series could prove to be a pivotal point for the Guardians.
Their offense has slipped mightily from the beginning of the season when they were ripping the cover off the ball. But so has their pitching. They have a lot of good, young talent on their pitching staff, especially in that starting rotation. But they continue to have problems being the lockdown type of pitchers that the Guardians so desperately need this season.
The Guardians will send Triston McKenzie, who is 4-5 with a 3.51 ERA. He will have to deal with a hot lineup that can score runs by the bunches. The Guardians can ill afford to let many games slip in this series or else they could find themselves in a deepening hole in the AL Central.
Twins vs Guardians Head-to-Head
This will be only the third series of the season between the Twins and the Guardians. The current season series has been split 3-3 in their six previous games played. All six games to this point have been played in Minnesota.
