White Sox Go West
The Chicago White Sox start a road trip Monday night, opposing the host Los Angeles Angels in the first of a three-game series. Chicago snapped a four-game skid with a win over the Baltimore Orioles Sunda, and the Chisox are in third place in the AL Central Division, 3½ games behind the second-place Cleveland Guardians. Los Angeles is also coming off a win, salvaging the finale of a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners Sunday. LA is in third place in the AL West, some 11½ games in arrears of the division-leading Houston Astros. These two teams appear fairly evenly matched. Better Road Sox
The Chicago White Sox have been able to play above-.500 ball on the road this season, entering Monday with an 18-16 record away from the Windy City. That’s a big difference from their 16-21 log at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Right-hander Lucas Giolito will try to keep that road success going, making his 13th start of the season Monday night. Giolito is 4-4 with a 5.40 ERA, striking out 76 over 63⅓ innings, with rough outings in his last two. Giolito surrendered a total of 15 earned runs over 10 innings, four gopher balls.
Outfielder Gavin Sheets was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in Sunday’s win for the White Sox. Sheets is batting .220 in 2022 with six doubles, five home runs, 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
Designated hitter Andrew Vaughn is 13th in baseball with his .316 batting average, but went 0-for-9 with a pair of strikeouts in the final three games against Baltimore. The 24-year-old has 12 doubles, seven home runs, 32 RBIs and 23 runs scored.
Fightin’ Halos
The Los Angeles Angels finally came away with a victory in their series against the Seattle Mariners Sunday, only after the two teams had a bench-clearing brawl in the second inning. It was the eighth game in 11 days between the division rivals, and so familiarity did indeed breed contempt there.
“Look, you play eight games in a matter of a week against the same team, things like this happen,” interim manager Phil Nevin said after Sunday’s win. “The scheduling, tensions, that’s baseball sometimes, unfortunately. Some ugly incidents once in a while. I think that’s just what happened today.”
The Angels weren’t happy about pitch near the head of outfielder Mike Trout Saturday evening, so a couple of pitches thrown close to Mariner batters early Sunday sparked the confrontation. Trout was 1-for-2 with a pair of walk Sunday , and is now batting .291 with 16 doubles, two triples, 22 home runs, 45 RBIs and 51 runs scored.
Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani had his five-game hitting streak snapped Sunday with an 0-for-2, though he did walk twice. The reigning AL MVP is batting .259 with 13 doubles, a triple, 16 homers, 47 RBIs and 45 runs scored.
Right-hander Noah Syndergaard will make his 12th start of the season. Syndergaard is 4-6 with a 3.86 ERA, striking out 40 and walking 15 in 58⅓ innings. Syndergaard lost his last start against the Kansas City Royals, having surrendered five runs on eight hits-including two homers-in 7⅓ innings. He struck out five with two walks.
White Sox vs Angels Head-To-Head
These two teams split their earlier series, hosted by the Chicago White Sox in late April. Three of the four games were decided by at least three runs. The LA Angels have won each of the last five seasons between the teams.
Los Angeles has dominated the White Sox at home, going 20-5 at Angel Stadium against Chicago since the start of the 2014 campaign. The MLB lines for Monday have that trend continuing, with the Angels as -130 favorites.

White Sox vs Angels Prediction
Neither of Monday’s starting pitchers have fared well of late, but the Los Angeles Angels should have the edge with their deep batting order playing at home. The Chicago White Sox will fall to the hosts in the series opener.
