Both Teams Sniffing .500
The Chicago White Sox try to make it two straight wins against the host Los Angeles Angels Wednesday night in the rubber game of the trio. Chicago was 11-4 winners Tuesday, sits in third place in the AL Central, three games behind the second-place Cleveland Guardians. Los Angeles had a two-game win streak snapped, hanging on to third place in the AL West (a half-game over the Seattle Mariners). Spreading the Chisox Wealth
The Chicago White Sox have offensive potential in their order, which was in evidence Tuesday night. Seven different players had multi-hit games in the 11-4 win. Chicago was down by three early in the game, but scored five runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. Chicago finishing with 17 hits.
“You’re down three, and I think everybody was collectively saying, ‘We’re not doing this to (starter) Johnny (Cueto) again,” manager Tony La Russa said after Tuesday’s win. “Our guys were relentless. It’s what we can do.”
Reliever Elvis Peguero gave up four earned runs in his two-thirds of an inning. It was apparent do about everyone, including centerfielder Mike Trout, that Peguero’s positioning of glove and ball meant he was tipping his pitches. It was that sort of night for the Halos.
Outfielder Luis Robert had one of the team’s pair of two-run home runs in the contest, a 448-foot blast. He finished 3-for-5, double and scoring two runs. Robert is batting .295 with 10 doubles, eight home runs, 38 RBIs and 34 runs scored this season.
First baseman Jose Abreu was also 3-for-5 at the plate Tuesday, with two doubles, two RBIs and scoring two runs. Abreu is batting .273 with 19 doubles, nine home runs, 35 RBIs and 41 runs scored.
Righthander Michael Kopech will make his 14th start of the season Wednesday night. He is 2-4 with a 2.59 ERA, striking out 57 in 62⅔ innings. Kopech lost in his last two, having surrendered seven earned runs over 11 innings.
Ohtani’s Mound Duty
The legend of Shohei Ohtani continues to grow for the Los Angeles Angels, both while hitting and while pitching. He is making his 13th mound start of the season Wednesday night.
Ohtani had a home run in the loss Tuesday. He is 6-4 with a 2.90 ERA this season, striking out 90 in 68⅓ innings. The righty is coming off an outstanding outing against the Kansas City Royals last Wednesday, eight shutout innings with just two hits. He also recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts.
At the plate, Ohtani has been hot as well, with Tuesday’s homer his fourth in his last seven. He’s batting .268 with 15 doubles, a triple, 17 home runs, 49 RBIs and 46 runs scored.
Outfielder Mike Trout had a home run right before Ohtani’s Tuesday evening. It tied him for second in baseball with 23 on the season. Trout is batting .285 with 16 doubles, two triples, 46 RBIs and 52 runs scored.
White Sox vs Angels Head-To-Head
The season series between the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels gets decided Wednesday night, as each team has three wins against the other. Los Angeles was the series winners in each of the last five seasons these teams played (they didn’t meet in 2020), and nine of the last 10.
