Playoff Hopefuls Resume Series
Quick, a show of hands of people who predicted that the Baltimore Orioles would have a better record than the Chicago White Sox in late August? We didn’t think so.
With the Orioles striking first in the three-game series with Tuesday’s 5-3 win, behind a home run by Ryan Mountcastle, Baltimore is 13-7 in August.

One of the many issues for the White Sox has been underperforming veterans. One of the players leading that list is pitcher Lucas Giolito. He was 11-9 with a 3.53 ERA a season ago. However, Giolito goes into Wednesday’s contest with a 5.34 ERA. Giolito has pitched past the fifth inning in just one of his last six starts. During that stretch, he is 3-2 with a 7.39 ERA.
For Baltimore, Spenser Watkins has allowed one run or less in six of his last nine starts.
The White Sox (.272) and Orioles (.263) have the fourth- and ninth-best team batting averages in the month of August.
According to the MLB playoff odds, the White Sox (+3300) have the fourth-best odds to win the World Series. People aren’t ready to accept Baltimore as a playoff contender just yet, with eight American League teams with better odds to win the World Series than the Orioles, who are at +12500.
Pitching Woes Slowing White Sox
The news that starting pitcher Michael Kopech is going on the injured list with a knee issues is the latest blow for a pitching staff in need of good news.
A title contender coming into the season, the Chicago White Sox are currently third in the American League Central and in danger of missing the postseason. Since play resumed following the MLB All-Star Game, nine White Sox pitchers have thrown at least 10 innings and five of them have ERAs over 4.00.
Johnny Cueto and Cy Young candidate Dylan Cease are keeping the White Sox close to the division-leading Minnesota Twins. However, the bullpen has had some issues with the exception of Jimmy Lambert, who leads the Chicago relievers with a 2.84 ERA since the end of the MLB All-Star break.
The MLB betting lines total is set at 8½ and six of the last nine White Sox games finished under that total.
Rutschman Living up to Hype for Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles had plenty of intriguing options when it became time to make the first selection in the 2019 MLB draft. Infielder Bobby Witt Jr. and first baseman-outfielder Andrew Vaughn have been contributing in different ways for the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox. However, the decision to select Adley Rutschman is certainly looking like the right call.
Since the start of July, Rutschman is batting .288 with 13 doubles, five home runs, 16 RBIs and 34 walks. The catcher has been a key part of the surge that has the Orioles in contention for a playoff spot. He is hitting .316 with a .464 on-base percentage since the MLB All-Star Game. Rutschman (+375) is second in the American League Rookie of the Year race according to the MLB predictions.
Rutschman is hitting .308 with three walks and four extra-base hits in four games against the White Sox.
The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in five of Baltimore’s last seven games.
White Sox vs Orioles Head-to-Head
Baltimore has won four of the last five games against the White Sox and that includes Tuesday’s 5-3 win. The White Sox had won the previous eight contests as well as the last three games played in Baltimore.
Among the players with at least 10 plate appearances, Gavin Sheets leads Chicago with a .438 batting average against the Orioles this season. A.J. Pollock and Andrew Vaughn are a combined 4-for-31 with seven strikeouts. This is the first appearance for Giolito against Baltimore this season. He was 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two starts against the Orioles in 2021.
Austin Hays leads the Orioles with four RBIs against the White Sox in 2022 while Jorge Mateo is hitting .267 with three stolen bases.

White Sox vs Orioles Prediction
It is pretty hard to count on Giolito right now as the probable starting pitcher for the White Sox after he allowed eight hits and seven runs in three innings in his last start.
The White Sox might be without outfielder Eloy Jimenez as he was hit by a pitch in Tuesday’s series opener and is dealing with an elbow injury. For a team already without shortstop Tim Anderson, that is not good news.
Seven of the last eight times that the Orioles played host to the White Sox, the game has gone over the total.
