Second Game of Doubleheader on Tap
The New York Yankees look to increase their lead in the AL East on Sunday night when they play host to the Chicago White Sox for the final game of a contentious three-game weekend series. New York took the opener of the series on Saturday after Friday’s contest was postponed to Sunday, creating the doubleheader. Chicago has lost three of its last four heading to fall a game under .500. These teams won’t see each other again in the regular season, so both want to send a message in the final game. Make sure to check out our in-depth preview to help you decide how you want to bet online on the series finale.
Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for White Sox vs Yankees. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.
White Sox Having Trouble on the Mound
The Chicago White Sox went from allowing two total runs against the Kansas City Royals in a doubleheader on Tuesday to giving up 17 over the last three games, two of them losses. On Saturday, the New York Yankees scored seven runs on just eight hits, five of those runs coming in the second inning as the White Sox got into a deficit they couldn’t dig themselves out of.
Trying to shut down the opposition will be right-hander Michael Kopech, who will be making his eighth start. Kopech is 0-1 with a 1.54 ERA, taking that loss in his last start, when he faced the Yankees on May 15. Kopech went six innings in that outing, allowing three runs on just one hit, striking out three and walking four.
White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson will likely be playing with some fire on Sunday after taking a comment from Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson during Saturday’s contest as racist. Benches cleared during the contest, and there was plenty of talk about the comment after the game.
“He just made a disrespectful comment,” Anderson said after the game about Donaldson’s comment. “Basically he was trying to call me Jackie Robinson. ‘What’s up, Jackie?’ I don’t play like that. I don’t really play at all. I wasn’t really going to bother nobody today, but he made the comment and you know it was disrespectful and I don’t think it was called for. It was unnecessary.”
Anderson is third in baseball with a .350 batting average after going 2-for-4 on Saturday. He has eight doubles, four home runs, 15 RBIs, and 21 runs scored.
Yankees Try To Keep Focus on Field
The New York Yankees are having a lot of off-the-field controversies, between Saturday’s dust-up with the Chicago White Sox to some talk about the Baltimore Orioles’ new dimensions at their home at Camden Yards earlier in the week. But on the field, New York is cruising, coming into Sunday’s doubleheader with an MLB-best record of 29-10.
Much of the on-field success is thanks to the team’s big bats, including that of outfielder Aaron Judge, who is leading the majors with 14 home runs. Judge also is third in baseball with 32 runs scored and seventh with 30 RBIs and 17th with a .307 batting average, adding seven doubles.
Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton is right there with Judge in a lot of those categories, ranking third in baseball with 35 RBIs. Stanton is also batting .309 (15th) with three doubles, 11 home runs (tied for third) and 15 runs scored.
Right-hander Luis Severino will put his 3-0 record on the line when he makes his eighth start. Severino has a 3.63 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 34⅔ innings. He picked up the win in his last outing, facing the Orioles on Monday and going six innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out seven and walking two.
White Sox vs Yankees Head-to-Head
The New York Yankees have dominated the Chicago White Sox over the last two seasons, coming into Sunday’s contests with a 9-2 mark since the start of the 2021 campaign. New York has won four of the first five games with Chicago this season after taking five of six in 2021, including a perfect 3-0 record at home.
The White Sox took their only series at Yankee Stadium in both 2018 and 2019 by 2-1 counts (the two teams didn’t play in 2020). The MLB lines for Sunday’s second game are favoring the home team to keep up their recent success.
