Yankees Strong Pick to KO Red Sox in Game 2
The opener of this four-game series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox was postponed, creating a doubleheader on Tuesday. The same thing happened for the third game, complicating things for MLB best bets.
In the first doubleheader, the Yankees swept, winning the games 3-2 and 4-1. Both games were low-scoring, and both teams heavily leaned on their bullpens. For Thursday, we will be focusing on the second game of the doubleheader.

Starting Pitchers
Clarke Schmidt (9-8, 4.54 ERA) vs Nick Robertson (0-1, 6.06)
Clarke Schmidt has finally gotten consistent run in the Yankees’ starting rotation and carved out a nice role. There were a lot of bumps at the start of the season, but with 2023 winding down, he has started to find his rhythm. Over his last four appearances, he has a 3.47 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .233 batting average with 26 strikeouts in 23.1 innings. He went 6.1 innings in his last start, allowing three runs and striking out six.
The Red Sox will go with a bullpen for the nightcap of the doubleheader with Nick Robertson serving as the opener. The big right-hander has made 13 relief appearances this season, including four with the Red Sox. He faced the Yankees on Tuesday and pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit while striking out three.
Boston’s bullpen got a bit of a reprieve as starter Tanner Houck worked six scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory over New York in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader.
Another Doubleheader Makes Tough Betting Call
This has been a weird series in the historic rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox. MLB lines have changed so much due to the two doubleheaders and the teams are digging deep into their bullpens, hoping to pull something out that can lead to success.
The Yankees did that in the first doubleheader, with their bullpen pitching 9.1 scoreless innings on Tuesday. In Thursday’s first game, the Yankees used only two relievers. That might work out for some of the Yankees vs Red Sox player props, with Schmidt pitching well and likely to get a lot of innings in Game 2.
On the other hand, the Red Sox bullpen was not as strong in Tuesday’s doubleheader. In Game 1 on Tuesday, they only used two pitchers for 3.2 scoreless innings. However, in the nightcap, Boston’s bullpen used six pitchers for 4.1 innings, allowing two runs.
Another reason why best bets in MLB odds will be complicated for this game is that neither team’s lineup has been able to get much going. Even with the Yankees sweeping the first doubleheader, they have scored the second-fewest runs (15) in the last seven days, with a batting average of .142. While the Red Sox have been better overall recently, they only managed three runs in the first doubleheader before collecting five in Thursday’s opener.
The cherry on top for these historic franchises is their current race for last place in the American League East. The Yankees and Red Sox entered Thursday tied with the same record at the bottom of the AL East, and have been eliminated from winning the division.
Both teams are 7½ games out of the final wild card.

Yankees vs Red Sox (Game 2) Best Bets
While these teams are not playing for much anymore, they still don’t want to lose to their historic rival. The two doubleheaders complicate best prop bets on Sept. 14, due to tired bullpens, but can also make things more interesting.
Having a legit starter will help the Yankees. Plus, with the Red Sox bullpen getting tired in the second game of the last doubleheader, expect that to happen again on Thursday night.
