New York Takes Struggling Offense to Los Angeles

Bronx Bombers Continue 10-Game Road Trip

Coming off a four-game split in Oakland in which they scored six runs over the final three games, the New York Yankees will try once again to kick-start a sluggish offensive attack when they open a three-game series at the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The Yankees will avoid Shohei Ohtani in the series, which looms large with a three-game set at Tampa Bay on the horizon.

The Rays trail New York by seven games in the loss column as the week begins.

Let’s check the latest MLB news, stats, injury reports, and  MLB odds for Yankees vs Angels. We’ve plenty of MLB picks & predictions.

Montas Starts Opener for Yanks

It’s been a bumpy ride for Frankie Montas since he was acquired from Oakland prior to the trade deadline. He’s made four starts for the New York Yankees, giving up 16 runs in 19.2 innings and getting through six frames just once.

However, there are a few nuggets that might give you some confidence in a bet online that backs Montas. For one, his first four opponents while with New York – St. Louis, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Mets – all rank in the top 10 in the majors in scoring, whereas the Angels are 25.

That’s a big drop in the level of competition, and Montas has enjoyed many matchups with Los Angeles over the years. He’s 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) vs. the Los Angeles Angels and struck out a season-high 12 against them in a dominant outing earlier this year.

Additionally, Montas is coming off his best start in pinstripes, limiting the Mets to two runs in 5.2 innings. The outing earned him some praise from slugger Aaron Judge, whose opinion matters a bit in the Bronx.

If you’re wondering which Montas will show up, it’s a pretty good bet to expect a solid outing in this one. Whether or not he gets much run support is another matter. The Yankees are now batting .223 with a woeful .299 on-base percentage in August after they managed four hits – all singles – in Sunday’s 4-1 loss.

This is the time of the year when it’s kind of a grind,” Judge said. “This team knows that. We got our butt kicked. We have to step up and respond.”

For what it’s worth, New York hit .333 with six homers and eight doubles in a dominant three-game sweep of the Angels at home earlier this season. Something to ponder when making your MLB picks.

Angels Coming Off Impressive Sweep in Toronto

The Angels gave the Yankees a little boost over the weekend by sweeping three straight from the Toronto Blue Jays in Canada, a set of results that made the Blue Jays’ slim chances of catching New York even slimmer.

Los Angeles outscored Toronto 22-3, riding another outstanding start by Ohtani on Saturday and then his 28th homer in an 8-3 triumph Sunday. Mike Trout, who also went deep in the win, reflected on how his team will approach these games against contenders down the stretch.

“We’re trying to win ball games, we’re trying to build some positive momentum into the offseason,” Trout said. “Obviously we’re going to play some teams down the stretch that are in the race. We’re just trying to shake some things up a little bit.”

If the Angels can continue to shake things up a little bit and defeat the Yankees on Monday, it would be their fourth consecutive victory. They haven’t won more than three in a row since late April when they had the look of contenders themselves.

Jose Suarez starts for Los Angeles in the opener. He’s given up three runs in 5.1 innings in each of his last two outings after allowing only one unearned run in 17.1 frames over his previous three starts.

Overall, the lefty from Venezuela has surrendered one home run over his last five starts. Perhaps his ability to keep it in the park will keep the Yankees’ bats on ice and sway you in that direction at the sportsbook.

Yankees vs Angels Head-to-Head

New York needs to win one game in the set to clinch the season series for the third time in the last four chances (the teams didn’t play in 2020). Los Angeles has won three of the last four meetings at home after it had lost six straight at Angel Stadium against the Yankees in 2018 and 2019.

Yankees vs Angels Prediction

Angels hitters not named Ohtani who were in their lineup on Sunday are a combined 7-for-50 against Montas. Of course, Ohtani has crushed the Yankees right-hander (9-for-21, three homers), but it’s clear what the plan of action is. Attack everyone (carefully, of course, with Trout) and then work around Ohtani.

Should that plan play out, Montas is set up to build upon his solid outing last Tuesday against the Mets. He’s allowed four runs in 30 career innings in Angel Stadium and should be ready to win over some Yankees fans who are getting impatient with their deadline acquisition.

The MLB odds reflect that and give New York the edge here, but it’s not overwhelming. This should be a tight contest. We, too, lean ever so slightly to the visitors.
